Description This is the 'Grand Turk' being moored at Great Yarmouth dock.

The Grand Turk is a replica of a three-masted sixth-rate frigate, well known for depicting HMS Indefatigable in the TV series Hornblower. She has also served in the same TV series as the French ship Papillon. She was built primarily as an action vehicle for the international TV and film industry.

Friday night was the only time worth visiting. The ship had been out in the bay and was just returning to be moored. Once it was moored there was no decent location to get a sharp detailed shot. All along the quey it was full of tents and trailers for the festival, blocking any view to the ships. It slipped away quietly on Tuesday morning.

I love ships Normie!~ We had a replica of the HMS Rose here in Bridgeport for several years. She was the frigate that shelled Stonington harbor here in Connecticut when we had our little disagreements with you lot. She was the ship used in Master and Commander and several other films and shows. She was sold off to Newport Rhode Island some time back.

Yea I do too.. we have Mystic Seaport with the only remaining wooden Whaler. Charles W Morgan and some others there. Its' where they built the replica of Amistad the famous slave ship they used in the movie. She is home ported in New Haven but she's rarely there, she's always out on tour.

We lost most of our ship building to overseas companies. Thinking being British would do but it need more like cheaper prices.

The only company I can think of is Fairline. Probably more but none spring to mind at present.

davincipoppalag In reply to Lightfoot11 [2007-09-08 10:19:07 +0000 UTC]

We don't have much here anymore either.. Mystic is just a historical place..with preservationists and restorers....we still make submarines in Groton..I know the big Bath Boatworks in Maine is no longer used... I don't know where they build them these days

Far east and the Baltic states are the two main builders, these days.

Oh, forgot Chennai for 3 bits of wood tried with string. [link]
