Listen, what the fuck was stopping Raven from teaming up with Qrow and the gang when Cinder's crew had an entire plan that hinged on Raven making a portal for them? Raven had them at her mercy, she could have made a portal above a lava pit and they would have dropped down and burned to their deaths for fuck's sake.Related content

I believe the reason Raven didn't take advantage of that opportunity to betray Cinder was that she still did not believe that Ozpin's faction could defeat or even defend against Salem, and that Raven had decided she would need the Relic of Knowledge to be able to defend herself from Salem now that she had attracted Salem's attention as an enemy and Salem knew she had been 'harboring' the Spring Maiden. Qrow certainly wasn't going to let Raven just walk away with the Relic, and making a deal with Salem's forces and then betraying them was going to bring Salem down on her super hard, and attract huge amounts of suspicion to herself even if she somehow managed to make the mission go down in a way that obscured what she had actually done and who was responsible for the Relic heist failing. So for Raven's goals to be achieved, she had to stay aligned with Salem's faction until she had the opportunity to seize the Relic. What changed at the end was that Raven managed to keep her secret from any of the 'survivors' while getting the vault open except for her own daughter, and Yang pointed out that if Raven left now without taking the Relic, Salem *still* wouldn't have the Relic, and her attention would be very definitely focused away from Raven- and what Raven has shown she wanted most of all was just to lie low and have the conflict pass her by.

Wait, they established that her portals only open to those she "cares" for. How the fuck did she open a portal for Cinder and friends to go through it? Is she close to Vernal? She just met Cinder and Salem's other goons…
Wait, I forgot. If you try using logic with Miles and Kerry's writing, everything falls apart.

She has a bond with Vernal who was back at the camp. She got to Haven through a portal to Qrow, but didn't let him see her arrive because she was in bird form, and Cinder's crew was waiting at the camp.
You can tell she has a bond with Vernal, look at how worried she got when Cinder did the thing.

That's a pretty good explanation, thank you for correcting me. Though did they established that her and Vernal's bond is that of blood or an old lover?

UltraMarkIV In reply to Garchompisbeast [2018-01-13 22:45:54 +0000 UTC]
Than they did a poor job establishing that, they're dialogue and interactions gave no hints of that other than she took Raven's orders and respected her - not a bond of like say Shepherd and Garrus.

I dunno. I doubt it's Blood, though. I think it's just emotional bond.

And did they establish that good or in a ham fisted manner?
Actually, the more we talk about this, how the do these portals work if it's through "bonds?" Raven thinks Qrow and Tai are morons, and she ditched Yang after she was born. She either severed her bond with the two people she knows and didn't even bond with her own daughter. Is it suppose to hint that Raven secretly cares deeply for them but acts like a bitch for some twist later on?

Either once bonded, Raven can't eliminate those bonds, or she's just the ultimate mom tsundere.

I don't think it was ever directly explained. Just shown in casual conversation, whether it was gestures, expressions etc... Also, a lot of people are now saying Vernal was NEVER the maiden... I don't think this is true, since, in episode one of this volume, Leo talked about the Spring Maiden in such a way that he probably knew who she was, and of course talked about Raven after hearing Qrow's report. While it's obviously possible the Raven could have killed said maiden, and just made Vernal as a decoy, I'm pretty certain that the answer to all of this is that the last person in Vernal's thoughts was not that of Cinder, but that of Raven... I obviously could be wrong...

Except it wasn't, it was shown to be that they were simply professional and never really gave us any real hints of them having a bond other than a boss and their right hand that has a raven tattoo.
Yea, Vernal was never the Spring Maiden. If she was, than Miles and Kerry once again broke their own rules/lore. They only loophole so far was Cinder's bug thing that Salem gave her - which has yet to be explained as far I can remember.

Vernal is close enough to have the weapon of the prisoner without Raven being alerted by that, close enough to earn the respect of the two thugs, close enough to have a discussion about what happened when Raven revealed the spring maiden, close enough that more than 70 % of their scenes in are together.
Tell me when Miles/Kerry broken their rules. I' m interested.

Not so much care, as much as people she has bonded deeply with. In this case, it was because Vernal, whom she'd been sheltering for a long time, was who it was for. Now, this also calls into question of course whether Raven was always the spring maiden or not (for me at least, b/c I'm still not sure), but I think it's fair to say, Raven definitely cared about Vernal.

Maybe she knew Salem would have her revenge in some way? Like she valued her own life over possible revenge or shit like that? Plus she already hated Ozpin's inner circle so... Not saying this isn't a good point, just adding on...

Yeah... Raven's an idiot. While she couldn't have opened a portal to just anywhere (it has to be near one of the people that she'd linked with or perhaps a location that she's extremely familiar with), she could have EASILY turned the tables on Cinder and company if she'd used her goddamn brain.
Having herself and Vernal on the heroes' side would easily have turned the tide in their favor, but she had to be EDGY and fight with her brother. Seriously, she, Qrow, and Vernal fighting against Cinder would have have enabled the the remnants of teams RWBY and JNPR to crush Emerald, Mercury, and Hazel.
Goddammit I hate Raven. She's such a stupid character.

She should have recognized immediately that there was no way in hell that she and her clan were going to be able to just walk away from all of that. Her Maiden powers and the relic were just too valuable for Salem to leave alone.

In the first place if she didn't want to get involved she should have just returned the spring maiden using her portal to crow

Hell, she didn't even need to return the Spring Maiden, she just needed to sent her somewhere far away from the tribe (like Patch) and she could have remained uninvolved.

I'm really interested in the story of the previous Spring Maiden. Like what if she was emotionally unbalanced, and tried attacking Raven? Or lost control of her powers? Or was going to side with Salem in a bid to save her own life, as Raven would ironically end up doing?

hillerj In reply to DragonTurtle2 [2018-06-23 05:29:14 +0000 UTC]
My impression from Raven was that the previous Spring Maiden was just a scared little kid. That it hadn't been someone who had been prepared to be a Maiden even as much as Pyrrha, this was just a child.

She´s not stupid, she´s just scared of failure.
When presented with a challenge, she either bails or picks the side that has the most chance of survival. However, she doesn´t include herself in these scenarios, so if a currently weaker force would have the upper hand with her help, she´ll side with the currently stronger force.
She´s an opportunistic coward, combined with a severe case of learned helplessness.
Raven takes every chance to get out of a tough situation and doesn´t believe there is anything she can do to save herself. After all, she had Vernal join her bandit tribe, and when Yang showed up, Raven tried to do the same again.
Honestly, I really wonder what RWBY would be like if Raven occasionally checked in with Taiyang, using her semblance to make that a 5 second trip back and forth.
Obviously Yang and Ruby would know Vernal, and thus would be aware of the maidens and stuff. Ok, maybe not, but it´s fun to think about how things would´ve turned out if Ruby and Yang would´ve been trained by Vernal and Raven, in addition to Qrow and Tai.
