Description
edit 12/13/11 -Edited the colors and cropped it a bit. May edit again later. Older version can be found hereThis is for ~ghostarin who requested Sol and Ky relaxing. It has been a very long time since I have drawn anything this... fluffy... so hopefully it turned out okay and hopefully it was worth the extra wait.
Also, check out my tumblr... all WIPs and sketches will go there from now on. [link]

It has been so long since I had drawn anything fluffy with Sol and Ky. It's nice to know I can still pull it off. Thank you!

I am so happy that you like this piece and that you were able to pick up on all of those little things I put into it! I am particularly proud of how the lighting came out and both of their expressions.
And your interpretation of the scenes is so adorable I couldn't help but smile!! Also thank you for such an interesting request I had so much fun with this!

Oddly enough you aren't the first person to suggest that...
But, I don't even know what the book is and I drew the picture and set up the scene! It could be anything. My first thought was legal philosophy or a history book but the book is too thin for those too. However, I think I like the thought of it being some sort of religious text and I'm pretty sure that that should have been my first guess.

You really should be more self-concious of what you're drawing before you draw it, lol
If you draw something with a certain level of detail, it would make sense to actually know what those details are on a tangible level.
If you ever draw architecture or scenery for a comic or manga, this is basics.
If you've ever read Genshiken Manga, just looking at an Otaku's bedroom with toys and paraphenalia strewn about, the artist knows EXACTLY what is in the room and how it is placed. Some artists have lots of notes written for a particular scene they want to set up prior to a full draw.

Perhaps I should, but I never really found the contents of the book he happens to be reading to be that important. The prompt was "Ky and Sol relaxing" so my focus was on Sol and Ky relaxing. When I planned out the picture, I wanted Ky to be reading a book. Sure I could have spelled everything out for the people who are looking at this piece but I often find that leaving things for the viewer to interpret on their own is much more interesting. I want people to see the book and think "what is he reading?" and come up with their own answer and put a piece of their-selves into it. Is it the Bible, is it a romantic novel, is it a history book, or is it just Generic book in Ky's Library #472? It could be anything and each viewer will have their own interpretation and will have engaged with the piece more trying to fill in their own details than if I had filled in all of the details myself.
I tried to keep the scenery rather simple to keep it out of focus for that reason, if I wanted people to look all over the page then naturally I would create a detailed room and if I needed the room to tell the viewer something about the two men in the picture then it would have more details and be planned out extensively to spell out the nature of their meeting without words. However I wanted to keep it as simple as possible to stay within the spirit of the original request so instead the viewer got a light source that obscures the room and attempts to drag the eyes across the screen onto Sol and Ky who are the intended focal point.

Haha, okay okay, it's fine.
I guess it all depends on context and need.

Target Neutralized. Switching Modes.
Haha, sorry about attacking you with a wall of text, but I jump at every opportunity to talk about my process because I do put thought into it (some more than others) and usually I never get to share it. It's nice to get comments that are more than "This is good XD" every once in awhile and advice is always welcome and I do keep them in mind. Reading your comment does make me realize how I could have done this piece a little differently and even have made it more interesting. I could have added more details to really set up a scene and maybe had made the book Ky was reading more meaningful to the overall interpretation of the scene. However, those aren't things that always cross my mind when I start drawing a picture and by bringing it up it kind of brings more factors into light that I can take into my next pieces or even this piece if I ever decided to revisit it. So thank you

There are days I wish I had half the skill and knowledge applied to my art style that is floating around in my skull. Otherwise it's just wisdom I pick up from other artists that I save for the day I actually DO something with it.

That's too thin for a Bible, I think it's a Catholic prayer book

You've never been to a hotel, have you? Some bibles are just thin New Testament versions.

Haha I know Gideon Bibles, but they're still tinier than the one in the picture.

Awesome picture BTW
I really like Ky's Catholic aspect(though I belong to a different group) and I think that no character in anime/manga has ever captured Christian values as much as Ky.

Thank you. I really tried my best to make them look as relaxed as possible. It was funny because I don't think I had ever drawn Ky smiling before, haha.

Thanks, I am really happy with how this turned out. I went a lot simpler than I usually do and planned out everything ahead of time and I think that really paid off.

I draw really slow and usually don't finish a lot of the sketches I start but sometimes I want to share what I have as opposed to keeping it to myself and I don't really want to clutter my Deviantart. Anyway, thank you for the visit it means a lot.
