Description

Both models created by SimplyAChair on Deviantart.  www.deviantart.com/simplyachai…

Story:

Tana and Eirika were cold, so Eirika used a spell to light a fire, which happened to shrink them.  (Yeah, I don’t really know what to do for the story with this one.)

Notes:

About 2-3 times a year I get into a Sacred Stones kick and think “you know, I should shrink someone from Sacred Stones.”  Then I remember that Sacred Stones is a 2d game and the only models that exist for it are the ones created by SimplyAChair.  So far I believe he has only made Tana and Eirika, and generally I like to animate with at least two characters at a time (although now that I think about it this one would have worked with just Tana).  Tana’s model is great, no problems there, but the Eirika model happens to be heavily Christmas themed, meaning it’s really only on theme 1/12th of the year.  (I know this sounds like I’m complaining but both models look excellent, and I’m very thankful that SimplyAChair allows us to use these models.)  I guess I got lucky that this time I got in a Sacred Stones mood happened to be close to Christmas time, lol.

The idea behind this one was that it’s cold, and Tana and Eirika are trying to light a fire to stay warm.  I tried to have Eirika rubbing her arms and having her cloak around her to show that she’s cold, and I tried using blue-ish lighting to make the environment look colder.  Tana is supposed to be using a flint and steel (although now that I think about it having her use a cigarette lighter would be pretty funny), but Eirika gets frustrated that it’s taking too long and casts a fire spell.  For some reason the spell shrinks them as they’re warming themselves because you can’t have a shrinking animation without some shrinking.

This was very much intended to be a quicker animation to make, as evidenced by it’s shorter than normal runtime, and a pretty decent amount of empty frames once they start shrinking.  I knew that I wanted to get this out before Christmas so it would be on theme, and I’ve also got another idea that I’m about to start working on in about a week (weird timeframe, I know, just bear with me), so I didn’t want to spend a month on this like I did with both of my previous animations.

While the slightly more urgent schedule cut down the potential scale of this animation, I don’t think it ended up affecting much of the animation itself.  Eirika is pretty expressive while she’s just sitting there, and I think I did a good job with that.  The way Tana strikes the flint and steel looks pretty cool too.  I actually forgot to add the sparks at first, so I had to re-render the entire animation.  Oops.

I’m… okay with how the fire turned out.  When I started I figured the fire couldn’t be too difficult to make, as you probably just used the default fire effect and called it a day.  Well, I mean that’s pretty much what I did, but it doesn’t look great.  I guess it doesn’t look bad either though.  Eirika’s fireball throw looks pretty neat, and the pose they do when they’re warming up is a bit basic, but I didn’t have a whole lot of freedom with that part.  I tried to think of alternate ways that one would warm themself by a fire, but that was really all I could come up with.  Oh well, it’s a nice pose.  Just a shame they both do the same thing, and hover in the same pose for pretty much the entire time they shrink.  I do like the pose Eirika strikes after shrinking though.  It looks fun and is different from Tana’s.

The chair that Eirika sits on, as well as the chair next to Tana that goes unused are mostly just there for scale.  Usually when I have multiple characters, I shrink one and leave the other normal size to build a sense of scale.  Here though, I decided to shrink both of them (I don’t know why, I guess it kind of made more sense with the scenario) which means it would be harder to see how small they were.  That’s why I ended up adding both of the chairs, so that you would have something to compare them to.  I’m not really sure why I decided to have Tana and Eirika end up different sizes.  I guess visual variety?

I really don’t have as much to say about this animation as I normally do.  It was just a smaller scale (ha, shrinking pun) project that doesn’t have as much going on.  The characters are reasonably expressive, and the actions read well enough.  Which is about all that I can ask for from this one.  The next projects I’m planning to start work on are substantially more ambitious, so they’re defo gonna take longer.  I’m really looking forward to both of them though, the first because it’s a really stupid, but awesome idea, and the other because… well, you’ll see when it comes out.
