Notes:
Yeah, I know drinking tea that shrinks you isn’t exactly the most creative scenario in the world, but considering how like half the supports in Engage seem to be about drinking tea, this one was kind of a gimme. No written story for this one. I can’t really think of anything particularly interesting to write for it, with the exception of Eirika potentially choosing to stay shrunken, as it’s shown that Lyn can grow back, but Eirika doesn’t.
At first this animation didn’t have Lyn and Eirika in it at all. It was just supposed to be Ivy and Celine. Celine has one of my favorite designs in Engage, as I really like how her dress looks, so I was pretty excited to get to use her. And the number of characters who’ve been ripped from Engage yet is somewhat slim pickings, but I still like Ivy. It seemed like Celine’s dress would be a massive pain to animate, but it was actually hardly any work at all. It’s designed in a way so that she has nearly full range of motion of her legs without moving her dress at all. Ivy works in pretty much the same way, where she can move her legs pretty freely without disrupting her dress, which is a huge lifesaver.
Eirika’s model got ripped a while back actually, and although I wanted to, I never really found a spot to use her in. I could have paired her with Tana for someone from her game, but I could just never think of a scenario for them. Then I thought that I might as well add her into this scene, and she could be engaged with either Ivy or Celine for her inclusion to make sense. And then of course if one character has an emblem, the other one probably should too. My options for Ivy’s emblem were Lyn, Lucina, Corrin, Micaiah, or Celica. I recently did a few with Micaiah and Celica and didn’t want to overuse them. And I wanted to keep the joke going of Corrin just barely avoiding being present in any of my animations. (This marks like the 6th time she was fully planned to appear, and ended up getting scrapped, lol) Which leaves me with Lucina or Lyn, and personally I prefer Lyn. Plus Ivy is a great candidate for Lyn’s ring in Engage, which makes the story make a bit more sense.
I really did want to add sound for this animation, but between having four different characters to get clips for, having very limited access to Engage’s voice clips, and not being able to move the characters’ mouths (which makes it really jarring when they master ventriloquism), I decided it was probably alright that I don’t put in sound. I’m definitely not dropping support for sound in animations entirely, just for this one I wasn’t able to add it in. Assuming it’ll work for the next one, I’ll definitely try to do it for that though.
As far as notes about the actual animation goes, eh, it’s fine. Some of the walk cycles were nice, and I like how Celine hands Ivy the tea, but most of the motion is pretty bland and generic. In fact, the characters barely move at all for the second half-ish of the animation, mostly either re-using old poses, or staying pretty still for the whole thing. Part of the reason for this is because animating the intro for this was a huge ask, and ate up a good portion of the “mental budget” for this one. Dealing with 4 characters all on screen at the same time, all having at least slight interactions with each other felt like a completely overwhelming task. Even though in reality it was probably only 2x the work of what I normally do, it was just super hard to conceptualize it and find a place to start.
Eirika’s animation is actually pretty decent overall, and is definitely a highlight. The way she floats looks pretty nice and feels rather ghost-like, which is how I think Emblems are intended to feel. The way she greets Lyn and looks at Ivy at the start is fun. And the shrug she does at the end on Lyn’s shoulder looks pretty cute. I really wanted to emphasize her clapping her hands together and vanishing when Lyn goes to grab her, but I just couldn’t get it to look right, which ends up making it a bit hard to notice.
The last 20 seconds or so where Lyn puts them in the teacup was actually a last minute addition. I had completely finished the render without it, having it end when Lyn is holding Ivy and Celine in her hands, then the next day I decided that I wanted to add just a bit more to give the animation a bit more identity. I think it’s pretty neat. The motion is a bit rigid and janky, but Celine and Ivy are far away from the camera, so it’s hard to tell anything is amiss. It’s also neat how it brings the teacups from earlier back into relevance, and ties everything together nicely.
