You meant to say that they aren't  mammals?
Because all mammals breastfeed their young. It's their defining characteristic.

Being that Vernids are a fantasy species, they don't necessarily follow all martial laws of nature. Think of it like a platypus, if you would, who, as mammals, shouldn't lay eggs yet they do.

Vernids give live birth and the pups eat meat from the time of their birth, meaning there's no need for breasts and milk production for the species; despite them being very much mammal-like. Yes, it's a defining characteristic for our mammals, but in the fantasy world things can potentially evolve in such ways that the need for that is voided.

Platypus is a marsupial. It's a different thing from a regular mammal, not to mention a lot more ancient.

From my point of view it should be called pseudomammal then. It's a lot like mammal (like you said) but it isn't.

TheFroppening In reply to Charanty [2017-02-10 01:03:44 +0000 UTC]

Actually, you're wrong. A platypus is a mammal and not a marsupial. They are a "Monotremes" or "Basal Mammal" or "Prototheria" which is a subclass of mammal, not marsupial.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monotrem…

"Monotremes are basal mammals  that lay eggs (Prototheria ) instead of giving birth to live young like marsupials  (Metatheria ) and placental mammals (Eutheria ). The only surviving examples of monotremes are all indigenous to Australia  and New Guinea , although there is evidence that they were once more widespread. The existing monotreme species are the platypus  and four species of echidnas . There is currently some debate regarding monotreme taxonomy ."

I will agree to disagree and accept a "psuedomammal" term, but personal opinion still biases me to them being mammals.

Sorry English isn't my native language, so I think I confused terms. Thanks for correcting!

Well, I guess we all allowed to have our own headcannons since author didn't clear anything.

It's all good, it happens so no worries!

I agree there. Perhaps one day it'll have proper clarification lol

MonsterMoxie In reply to Charanty [2017-02-08 21:43:22 +0000 UTC]

They give live birth (as opposed to laying eggs), but don't have breasts or nipples, and don't produce milk. They do have fur like mammals, but they are a fictional species so it doesn't really matter if they don't follow reality exactly .-.

Charanty In reply to MonsterMoxie [2017-02-09 11:24:59 +0000 UTC]

Technically it should be called fur-covered warmblooded viviparous animal.
Pseudomammal will do, I think.

What would happen if a Tribal and Modern vernid were to reproduce? If that's even possible..?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Coolcookiecat In reply to cyberacat [2017-02-23 14:32:22 +0000 UTC]

While very unlikely, yes they could. Depending on the circumstances, the child would probably go back to one parent's home. If it stays with the modern parent, it would probably be normal besides sometimes being a bit wild and having a slightly different appearance.

This is so cool... you have the entire story with your characters. My younger brother does something similar, but with imaginary cultures, rituals and temple sketches. So I know it takes allot of work and imagination.

Tribal Vernids are my fav. Why? Well, their times seems to be simple enough.

Although I also like the modern ones. "They are usually unemployed." It means they must be pretty annoying in the universe they are in!

Question!
Is it a free species and could I make a Vernid of my own? Do I have to credit you?

Couldn't find a Q&A on your profile. And if I'm simply too blind link me to it please.

And if that does happen, I know for a fact that I'll be referencing your work.
It's just THAT good.

Again, I don't speak up much, But boy howdy how you inspire.
Thanks for doing what you do ^.^

I've been sure to check the information!
Since I'm that paranoid person, there ARE an open species, but I need to follow the anatomy and rules they have.
If so, would it be possible for me to make one of my own??
