Description Sarah's prize: the head of the beggar bird, which Jareth disguised himself as in the Labyrinth tunnels.

I loved that vulture-headed costume, and I love the idea of Sarah flaunting her victory with spoils, something that belonged to the King.

I hate working with dark colors and severe shadows, and I'm still not very good at it, so I thought I'd practice. Dark fabric is way less of a brainache than light. I don't even know if that makes sense, but oh, it's true.

I realized too late that the little skull pinned to the hat is a tiny humanlike skull and not a rodent's. Even creepier! A faerie skull? A tiny goblin?

It's only a costume, just rags and bones, but what's Jareth's is Jareth's. No doubt he'll make it a mission to get it back and teach her a little lesson...

I must say you do very well with dark colors.
And I always love how pretty you make Sarah look. You capture her innocence but at the same time her determination. Yay!

Maybe there should be a follow up picture of Jareth reclaiming what is his? *hint hint*

(I ADORE your Jareth/Sarah pictures. Like, you don't even know. XD)

I loved that costume in the movie, for some reason.... I never realized it was a vulture skull, sweet. You're great at drawing skulls and invertebrates, btw.
I love the dark, sultry, kind of look Sarah's giving. Great job!

Heh! Truly, I stick almost exclusively to birds and octopi. I gotta branch out!

She's challenging Jareth. You want your hat back? Come and get it.

I recently did a large pencil drawing of a tiger fading into its bones. It was fun to draw. It was for the Junior art show. Thank god most people understood the message (endangerment - extinction). I've always enjoyed bones and anatomy... I wanted to be a paleontologist when I was younger.

Lol.... WHY challenge him. I'd give in x) Hahahhaha. I'd be like "*bows* I'll give you what you want, Jareth!" Hahahhahahahah.

Of course she'll love it. Jareth wore it at the time when the shadows and light worked together so perfectly for her. XD

GAH! I love Sarah's face here, so badly. She's...really gloating, yet...it also looks like she's longing

FAVE! <3

Spoils of war, eh? That's an interesting concept, and not one I've seen done. It's strange that she would choose to surround herself (quite literally) with something of Jareth's, but then, I suppose, it is rather in keeping with her arrogant side. Such a macabre trophy, and yet the perfect thing to start a new war over.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lily-fox In reply to Ergott [2008-01-23 15:14:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, I feel like it's less arrogance and more, like... playfulness. "Look what I stole! I got Jareth's bird hat, WHATCHU GONNA DO ABOUT IT?"

My nutty perceptions of the Jareth/Sarah relationship are so tame and sweet, which I know ain't canon. He's crafty and full of angst, she's petulant but strong. They're headbutters, right? You gotta figure, once she grows up she'll learn the persuasive value of a good return flirt.

Ergott In reply to lily-fox [2008-01-23 16:34:25 +0000 UTC]

That's a very good point! I could totally picture Sarah flaunting her prize; she is, after all, still very much, emotionally, a child.

Don't read too far into what's canon and what's not. Half the fun of Labyrinth is how open-ended it is. We *aren't* really given clear definitions of what Jareth and Sarah's boundaries are, so what's canon to one person may not be canon to another. Most people portray Jareth as this semi-evil overlord, but to me he's more of a playful manipulator (not necessarily malevolent, but with a dark side to counterweight his general buoyancy). My Sarah is often different as well; she's most commonly seen as a whining little snot, but I prefer to see her as merely confused about how to be who she is. Anyway, my point is, characters are who you make them to be; canon is inconsequential in something so informationally vague as Labyrinth.

You're totally right. Part of the beauty of Labyrinth is how well it lends itself to interpretation and continuation.

I imagine grown-up Sarah as being like my little sister. Snappy, brilliant, hilarious at all times. She has a great way of looking at you kind of sideways, smirking, and she could argue the horns off a bull. Also, she's a dreamer and has been seeing goblins since she was just a sprout. So I end up projecting a lot.

I love your Jareth. At first I wanted Sarah to brain him with a cast-iron skillet, but as with the best kind of characters, the more you know him, the more sides there are and the less loathsome he becomes. He has a badly-concealed gem sweetness and chivalry, buried under a lot of sauce and predatory thrusting.

I alway tend to get just a bit upset when people throw around 'in-character' and 'out-of-character' labels around for this fandom. I mean, clearly we have a few established boundaries, but beyond that who's to say what's canon and what's not? Jareth was the leading male in the movie, but if you watch it objectively you'll notice that he has very little time on-screen, and a lot of his scenes are wide-open to interpretation. You can't know what's within a character's personality until you try actually portraying them that way.

You're little sister sounds a lot like my big sister, especially the arguing thing. I see an adult Sarah as sort of your everyday woman, just a bit more open minded. Perhaps she has a sparkle in her eye, a slight air about her to suggest she knows a marvelous secret. I like keeping her relatively normal though, because it really throws whatever fantastic situation she's in, into very stark relief; you can clearly see what her everyday life is like, and how Jareth continually throws a wrench into it all.

My Jareth really is meant to come on strong, because he had so much of a magnetic presence in the movie. The biggest reason I never have Sarah bash him a good one is because it's an integral part of who he is; smack him all you want, but it's not going to do any good. And I rather imagine Sarah realizes that; he has many facets, should you stick around long enough to see them, but he's always going to be in your face, snarking, stalking, and living life by his own rules.

Well, it bothered me, at first, that in "Bodice Ripper" Sarah doesn't stand up against him when he's being sexually pushy, having been in situations like that myself. It's not sexy, it's infuriating. I wanted her to slap his face to get his attention and say, "This isn't your fantasy world where shit goes your way. THIS is reality, and when I say you need to leave me alone, you need to LEAVE ME ALONE."

But then, like you said, an integral part of Jareth is his magnetism, the fog he puts over you, like the peach dream. You forget why you're upset. You sort of like the chase, and then you love the chase, and you can fight, sure, but why?

Brilliant.

Jareth is a hangover in reverse. At first you get all this confusing and overwhelming unpleasantness, but after a while you become intoxicated. I think what Sarah doesn't quite understand, and a lot of readers haven't picked up on, is that she *does* have an unspoken power over him. She could reject him if she really wanted to. He might not leave her alone whenever she asks him to, but her responses fuel his actions; if she really wanted him out of her life all she'd have to do is not respond to his intimacies. It's all part of the power-play, the subtle checks and balances that keep the relationship on this side of sanity.

Eek! I love her expression. The framing is just lovely ... and the floaty fabrics!!
My uncle worked on the Labyrinth I always get really excited when I see his name on the credits! He talked about David Bowie once or twice, but I didn't really get the depth of it when I was 4

The work of the shadow on Sarah's face is fabulous as is the choice to have the hair and cloak come out of the border.

Thanks for sharing.
