Description
Woody wasn't smiling when I drew this, but it sort of became necessary. Nothing's so bad that a sweet dog nearby can't make it a little better.I'm pretty proud of how all this color turned out. I don't do a lot of complicated lighting (not that this is exactly complicated, but it is for me), and when I do it right it sure feels good. The wave cup is from an old drawing of mine, and I recycle that pattern a lot.
I have a great dog, a Shar-pei named Oscar. He's a total meatloaf, and he's got these big, sad eyes, but he really smiles when he's happy. He and I have had a weird relationship. I'm not a dog person, but I am, at least, an Oscar person. He knows when I'm sad and he plops down next to me. I feel like he knows he can't do much, but at least he can share in my blues. I bet Slinky's like that. They've been through a lot together, those two.

That sucks for you. My shar-pei passed away three years ago, and in his whole life he never "caused havoc". He was attacked by other dogs but never fought back. He was surrounded by grabby children and never growled. He shared a house with a bunch of pushy cats who stole his bed and his treats and he never menaced them. His only desire was to be a Good Dog.
So yeah, don't preach to me about such-and-such breed being a certain way. I get that collies gotta herd, greyhounds gotta run and pitbulls gotta roughhouse, but clearly there are exceptions. I am also not a dog lover. I do not like dogs at all. But I loved my dog. He was a good boy.

I've always thought slinky was an under appreciated character in toy story.

Good old Slinky. Like any dog, he's there to cheer his friends up whenever they clearly need it. I can see this happening between those two friends.
P.S. It's probably obvious, but I've always loved Slinky Dog.

I love the idea of Slinky comforting Woody when he's having an off-day. Usually people just have Buzz or Jessie try and help, not that they couldn't help, it's just that Slinky was Woody's friend first, before Jessie or Buzz were around. Like you said, they've been through a lot together, so it works and this is very sweet. :]

I feel the same way. Nobody really understands you like your dog, you know?
Thank you for all these wonderful comments, by the way!

Just looking at this makes me sad too, especially with my imagination making up a background story to the image.
I'm thinking that Bo was sold at a yard sale and he tried to save her like Wheezy, but was too late. Now he's staring at the front yard, thinking of his failure

The scene outside looks more like a sea than a sky. A few clouds would fix that or maybe a slight hint of sidewalk? Also, Slinky has more spirals than that (but slinkies are UBER hard to draw out so its ok)
I like the design on the pencil holder. The atmosphere of this is really relaxing. I love it!

You know, Slink doesn't add very doggish in the movies, but there's no reason why he wouldn't act like a dog sometimes to make his friends feel better - especially as Andy's dog gets less active.
Anyway, this is really sweet, especially with the soft lighting. And it reminds me of the two dachshunds we used to have; they always cheered me up.

Awwww this is so cute!! I don't have a dog, but my mom has and she'll tell me stories that happened with hers and I'll just be so amazed at the love dogs have for their owners. You really can't havea btter companion than a dog, nor a more loving animal.
And this piece is cute, plus I always loved their relationship. Slinky and Woody seemed to be such great loyal companion an a special one. <33
Love this piece!

... I started crying over this. That's - wow. Very amazing. I think it's the contrast between bright colors and the somewhat foreboding knowledge of what happens to their relationship. I really love this!

Aaaww... This so reminds me of my guy when he has a bad day and one of our dachshunds shows up to make things better. Spitting image.
Needless to say when I saw a full size Slinky Dog at Toys R Us I had to pick it up. He's my desk buddy!

I love old dogs. The sweetest dog I ever met was an elderly wiener dog (say that out loud and try not to laugh). She was super mellow and would wriggle under blankets to get warm.
