Description Woody wasn't smiling when I drew this, but it sort of became necessary. Nothing's so bad that a sweet dog nearby can't make it a little better.

I'm pretty proud of how all this color turned out. I don't do a lot of complicated lighting (not that this is exactly complicated, but it is for me), and when I do it right it sure feels good. The wave cup is from an old drawing of mine, and I recycle that pattern a lot.

I have a great dog, a Shar-pei named Oscar. He's a total meatloaf, and he's got these big, sad eyes, but he really smiles when he's happy. He and I have had a weird relationship. I'm not a dog person, but I am, at least, an Oscar person. He knows when I'm sad and he plops down next to me. I feel like he knows he can't do much, but at least he can share in my blues. I bet Slinky's like that. They've been through a lot together, those two.

I'm just glad they stopped before she got to the biting stage She's a gun dog by breed and therefore a retriever: if it doesn't fit in her mouth she doesn't know what to do with it. It's funny, sometimes she seems really intelligent and other times she's like the stuff blonde jokes are made off.

I am mainly a cat person, but my dad's dog Bosco know's my name. If my dad is on the phone with me and says my name, Bosco will get all excited. He is half Bearded Collie and all mutt, and sometimes he tries to herd people in the backyard if they stand to far apart

I adore my sister's dog to bits, and as we live together I have adopted him as our dog, not just hers.
Yuki is an adorable brown eyed charmer, the cats tease him and he just looks at us and his eyes say 'I hate having little brothers' with this tired patience. Not any of our pets have the intelligence level higher than a boot and only one out five has any sort of grace. Running head first into a wall doesn't seem to slow them down much.
Our Yuki is has also epilepsy so he might have a hard time as the years go by, epilepsy erodes the nervous system. He's not young and sprightly anymore but sometimes he still cuts loose and challenges his 'mum' into a play fight. He still makes a commotion out of meal times and hogs the bed when he decides to sleep next to one of us.
As a hunting dog he's a total failure and a suspected member of green peace. But dad still likes the company and occasionally borrows Yuki in the fall to go with him when he goes picking berries in the deep woods and swamps. Also when anyone is going hunting or fishing, he wants to go with. Come winter or summer he likes the outdoors, the only times when he hesitates in enjoying the outdoors is during heatwaves, he's snow white and loves winter better than any other season.
I hope we get to keep him for years to come still.

Yuki sounds like a great dog. And hilarious that he's kind of dumb. I always say, I'd rather spend my time with sweet, dumb people (or animals) than smart, mean ones.

I have a shar-pei/shepard mix named Dylan (after Bob Dylan, so it's funny that you're listening to him). He's not the smartest dog in the world, but he is the sweetest. And he's huge! But I swear he thinks he's little. He climbs in your lap and gets comfy as though he were pocket poodle, haha. Whenever anything gets me feeling down, all I have to do is wrestle with him until we're a panting mess, cuddling on the floor. So heck yes, Woody's smile is appropriate! And your lighting is beautiful; not bad for someone who claims to have a hard time with that sort of thing! You've captured a touching moment. I'm really not the biggest Toy Story fan, but Slinky was always my favorite character. And I always loved that he and Woody seemed pretty close. Man's best friend can be toy's best friend too, it seems.

But also their worst enemies. That dog from the first Toy Story was a demon, haha!

Ha ha! Yeahhh, Oscar has his stupid moments, but he's a real sweetie when he wants to be. That's funny that yours is so cuddly -- maybe it's the way I raised him, but Oscar only likes to be close to my husband while he sleeps, and that's about it. And the cats sleep on top of him. C; Maybe Dylan's shepherd bits are cuddly?

Well he was actually kind of a rescue; the people at the adoption center told us that he had been abused before. He was ridiculously skittish, the poor thing. Though he's big enough to eat a man alive, he backed away whimpering from toddlers when we first brought him home (I have no idea how he had been abused exactly, but his previous owners better hope I never find out). As we warmed up to him, he warmed up to us. C: He's even friendly with all the cats now too, haha. Few things are as adorable as cats sleeping beside an enormous dog!

Seriously. And man, I'm really happy you adopted him. I volunteer at a local shelter sometimes, and it never fails to completely break your heart, seeing dogs who are afraid of everybody. All you can do is give them all your love, you know? Cats are funny, they seem like they bounce back from bad situations pretty quickly. All the cats at the shelter at super mellow, like they'll come over and sit on anybody who doesn't move for ten seconds. But dogs are more like people. They need love and honesty like we do.

Tell me about it. I mean I love my cat (named Sappho, haha - we name our animals after influential figures in our house), but I sure as hell can't wrestle with her to make her feel better. Every pet I've ever kept has been rescued or adopted in a similar way, and the cats have always recovered more quickly than the dogs. It's completely heartbreaking, I agree. But when they do finally learn to let you in, and they hit you with those cliche puppy-dog eyes? Man do they make you feel like you've done some good in the world!

I'm allergic to dogs, but I love them so much. Whether I'm playing tug of war, fetch, or just sitting around like Woody and Slinky, I have the best time (with my friends' dogs). I love that animals have that ability to be such a comfort to us. It makes me love them even more.

Anyway, this is a really sweet picture. It makes me feel warm and nostalgic, even though Woody looks a little down.

Recently My wife and I had to put down our yorkie terrier, Jackson. We had him from a pup for 15 wonderful years. but the old man developed cancer and it was too advanced to treat. I didn't cry at my own parents funerals, but I became a sobbing mess as I wrapped his still little body inside one of my sweaters to bury him in (so that my arms would forever be around him).
We would still be a couple of nutcases except for one thing: Emma. A year ago we adopted an austrailian heeler, a beautiful red dog from our local animal shelter. She is so well mannered that I never had to teach her to sit, she does it naturally. Our Emma felt that we were in pain and was there to nuzzle our hands or to put her head in our lap, or just bring us out of our funk. I look in her eyes sometimes and wonder, "what's going on in your little doggie brain?" I hope to have her in my life for many years to come.

lily-fox In reply to USSteele [2010-09-10 12:01:19 +0000 UTC]

I'm so sorry about Jackson, and I completely understand -- sometimes we're closer to our animals than to almost anyone. We have no secrets from them, and they never love us less for any reason. They're reliably present, and they know us on a special cosmic level. When we lose our animals, we lose parts of ourselves.

You know, my sister said something that stuck with me... She says our animals always come back to us. One way or another, we find them again.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Sorry to randomly add to you, but that phrase your sister said about how our animals come back to us, I totally believe that too.

2 years ago we had to put my cat Kitna to sleep after 16 years of loving her. We think she had a stroke or two. Anyway, a month later we got our new cat, Magic, and I SWEAR they're the same cat, lol! She has these little habits that Kitna did, and it just makes me smile because it brings back good memories.

You were either DaVinci, Marie Γ‰lisabeth-Louise VigΓ©e, Artemisia Gentileschi or van Dyke in a previous life!!
And is that a little Hokusai. tease on the pencil cup?

I had a Westie as a child. He once found a possum. it played dead and he thought he'd killed it and strutted up to my mom with an "I-AM-A-Mighty-Hero" strut. Too cute.

I have to tell you, I only recognize two of those names. ;D The wave is one of my drawings, but it IS a nod to Hokusai!

Ha! That's kind of adorable. Our family cat, Purly, was a serious hunter. She caught everything there was to catch including snakes, and it was kind of heartbreaking when she brought us baby rabbits for like a week. When she couldn't find us anything bigger, she'd kill a carpenter bee and leave it by the flowerpot. And how could we chide her, the dear?

I have a silly dog story myself <3

When I was a kid, we had 2 scottish terriers named Nicki and Astra. One time I came home from school, and I couldn't find my mom anywhere. She had gone off to start a job, but I didn't know this. So feeling completely helpless, I sat down on the stairs and cried.

Nicki and Astra decided to join in by howling. It was very unexpected and so funny, that I pretty much started laughing rather than crying.
