Description
Mmm, I said I wouldn't, but I did.I sort of hated it when I was halfway through coloring, because I hadn't thought out where all the red would be, and it just looked junky and mismatched. But what with her vaguely green skin and his greenish cape, it actually turned out really nicely. I don't do enough stuff with black backgrounds or serious lighting, you know?
I started this because of a latent, predictable crush on Darkness, and Agape was just kind of a convenient stand-in for a love interest -- someone to totally cripple a dark heart, to make the Devil bend and break. But the more I draw her, the more I like her.
Agape wasn't perfect. She was fallible, highly suggestible, prone to her desires and the desires of others. From the books, we don't learn too much about who Agape was before being martyred, but her love and compassion were her obvious defining traits. She's always pictured as full of sorrow, which makes me think of the Buddha Avalokiteshvara, who, upon realizing that he couldn't alleviate the suffering of all the people in the world, was so overcome that he split into a thousand pieces, to better see the world. That's how the story goes, anyway. Compassion is beautiful but excruciating.
So from Darkness, she can gain a little selfishness, a little bit of the animal lust that can be so totally therapeutic when we need to escape our own heads. And Darkness, well... he's broken for her. But he doesn't mind.

my personal theory about Agape is... that she's not all that much of a Saint that she is cut out to be. But we'll see when they get that far. They keep a lot about her "covered up" so to speak, and that can either mean we're in for a pleasant or a nasty surprise.
Either way, I do like this. Somehow.. Darkness and Agape fit together so nicely... And I *love* how you draw Agape!

After their visit to... Aqua? I can't remember, and I don't have the books in my house... Yeah, I kind of started to suspect that Agape might have been seriously flawed. But so is everyone. The saints, you know, they aren't born perfect and holy. They're only human (or whatever they are, exactly), and their goodness comes from what they do with themselves.

*nods* I have my personal suspicion that Agape might be even more twisted than her sister Ludovique (danish translation of her name)

lily-fox In reply to ks-claw [2008-12-17 21:08:49 +0000 UTC]
I don't know if I believe that -- Ludovique was obviously, like, a potentially good person corrupted by power and attention. My heart broke for Ludovique, though, the way she just wanted the Genie to love her.
I think Agape -- as evidenced by her very name -- was interested in all facets of spirituality, and learned about as much as she could. I mean, traveling and trying new things and such. She had very much a bodhisattva's journey.

*nods* I felt sorry for Ludovique too, especially in the third installment where.. well, everything went to hell during that coup I hope somehow, that in one way or another it might go better for her, even though she's portrayed as the villain.. (As for the Genie, or "The Miracle Master" as he's translated to in danish.. I have my doubts about him...)
And though Agape's name itself means "love"... Well, love can be portrayed as many things and misused just the same. We'll just have to wait and see.

Again, amazing. You're the only person I know who can draw sexuality without it seeming dirty. And the red on red seems interesting to me more than junky. They're barely different shades, but it works. I bow before your attention to physics and detail, this time noticing how her binding pulls in the top of her breast and throws it off from the typical shape.

I like that you notice those tiny details that I spend time on. And the way I feel about sexuality is, for the most part, that it's pure and amazing. I mean, if you love someone, sex is another way of expressing your closeness and devotion, yeah?

Utterly gorgeous. I love how big scary Darkness is being so delicate with her clothes (bandages/wrappings?). And the look an his face is just . . . oh. *melts*
But I cannot quite place the look on Agape's face. Not that that's a bad thing she's just a little difficult to read. Kind of part sad, part desire, part . . . letting herself go? I dunno. Beautiful anyway.

She is totally hard to read. She always naturally looks so sad, with compassionately-tilted eyebrows and such, but I was going for a kind of gentle rapture. I think you pretty much nailed it.

it's beautiful Lily, one so many levels.
their expressions speak volumes, as several other comments have pointed out. I am not familiar with Agape (though she sounds terribly interesting), but her eyes and body language languish in a way that suggest inner strength. You drew Darkness as he would and often did look upon Lilly from the movie, but less mock and more endearment.
It is really well done.

It's like... I like that Darkness was obvious capable of tenderness, that although he desired Lily, it was a little more than that. Maybe it was love. Which is just about the most endearing thing ever, you know?
Thank you.

One of your best by far. You really can see the sorrow in her eyes, and yet, you can also see the power she has over him. This is probably one of the most majestic pieces I've see in a while. The colors fit together perfectly, since there's not only a contrast in character but also in manner as well. Even the nudity fits with it.

I think one of the reasons I love your art so much is because there is a story behind all of it, and the stories appeal to me. I love that her hair and Darkness are about the same red, and I love the vagueness in her face. Your hands are pretty hot too.

lily-fox In reply to lady472 [2008-12-17 21:04:27 +0000 UTC]
I think the only thing I really dislike about this piece is that vagueness in her expression. And she's meant to be kind of vague that way, but I like for a character's emotions to be readable. But you can't win 'em all!
I used to hate doing hands, but the more I practice, the easier it is to get 'em to do what I want.

lady472 In reply to lily-fox [2008-12-18 00:20:43 +0000 UTC]
No, you can't win them all. Ah well. I think she's more interesting to me because of her vagueness.
I used to be able to draw hands really well, like detailed and shaded perfectly. I stopped drawing though for some reason, and when I started back again, it didn't come back to me.

hmm.
I love her full upper lip. Normally I don't, but it just goes so well with the sorrow that fills her face. Her eyes, tilted just so that it looks like she might cry for all the troubled waters in her heart, trying to break free.
Her chest looks arched inward, as if her heart is too heavy for her to sit straight.
... the ribbons.
While there is compassion in Darkness' hands, and she so obviously owns him, I like that this is a gentle reminder that she is His as well.
The dark background is just wonderful against her pale tones.
Lastly, I really dig the way she almost sinks into the Darkness
