Description
Ben Cumberbatch in a peacoat. Who doesn't look sort of regal in a peacoat? Have we had this discussion before? The halo isn't really significant, just that I tend to want to throw a halo on everyone I ever draw. It looks appropriate, and he seems like such a nice fellow, so. I regret nothin'.
It's rare that I have an image I want to put down and then just sit and do it exactly. It always feels like such an accomplishment. This is one of those, and it's something I've wanted to draw for years, not necessarily Cumberbatch, but somebody standing that way. Finally it's done, and I don't have to think about it anymore.

I always love your use of texture. The flatness of his coat really makes the scarf texture really stand out. Over all it's just lovely!

Just when I thought I couldn't be more infatuated!!! The hair, the hands, the halo!!!!!
I'm torn between wanting to touch my screen and not wanting to obscure it with my hands!

Hee hee! I'm so happy you dig this. I was so put off by his looks at first that I actually said something about it (which goes against my policy of niceness), but I guess I just needed the time to come around. Now I think he is just the most beautiful creature.

His face is so changeable by degrees, you know? He ranges from a subtle crook of his mouth or his full blown b*tch-face sneer...and he's not afraid to throw himself so totally into the expression of his character to the point of pulling a really unattractive face. But the natural tilt to his eyes, his prominent cheekbones and his full lips are pretty glorious. Add the most swoon-worthy voice I've ever heard and yeah, I'm in the fan club. Glad you are too!!! That means oodles of phenomenal art to love!!! And love it I do!

The "halo" is actually super appropriate! In Renaissance/Baroque art, only canonised saints got the full halo; the "Blessed" - people who were revered as saints but didn't get the approval of the Pope to actually be sainted - were painted with rays coming from their heads. So it fits, I think, since Ben /is/ a wonderful person and he has his own enormous cult of not-quite-sainthood ^_^

I love this SO much! Gah I love your work Needless to say you captured his likeness perfectly. And I personally love the halos you give your pictures. One of mine and my sister's favorite pieces of yours is the haloed one with Jenny--"You can't save everybody; everybody don't want to be saved."
Anyway sorry for rambling! Love it!

Aw, ramble on, girl! C: I'm glad you and your sis like that one; it's one of my favorites, too. Ha, I should go and stick halos in every one of my drawings. I can't think of one where it wouldn't be appropriate!

People usually mess up drawing Cumberbatch around the eyes. The man has very unusual almond shaped eyes. But you have them down cold. Love the drawing!

Really? I feel like, when I see him misdrawn most of the time, the eyes are fine but his mouth or chin is sort of screwy. He has such an excellent mouth!

LamechO In reply to lily-fox [2012-03-22 17:12:50 +0000 UTC]
He has a fantastic mouth. Basically, Cumberbatch has a very unique look that can be screwed up easily when drawing him. But, honestly, it's a good exercise in drawing where, I at least, have a tendency to simplify people's looks in my fan art. Mostly because television/movies tend to shy away from unusual looking faces and go for a more pretty look. (read: simple, symmetrical features.) So more like James McAvoy and less Steve Buscemi. (Though between you and me, I'd rather draw Buscemi's face for the sheer challenge.)

I don't know if this is at all okay to say - I don't mean to be 'this drawing should totally be THIS character', because I don't mean in it in that way at all. Is this making sense? But to me, he reminds me of Howl from Howl's Moving Castle, the book. And now I have Benedict Cumberbatch accidentally being Howl in my head which I had never thought of before so thank you!

Of course it's okay, but I do understand! I've never read or seen Howl's Moving Castle, but it's awesome that this makes you sort of plug Cumberbatch into the role. I love when that happens.

I love the Cumberbatch. That could be the name of a new style of coat, like a mackintosh or an anorak.
I don't know about everybody, but I certainly want a face like that. Not necessarily handsome(though he is quite the striker), but well-defined. Sort of like the beauty of Gemma Arterton or Rhona Mitra.
Anyways, I love how you made him blonde instead of the black; it's his natural hair, which not a lot of people know, so if he could see this he might certainly be pleased.
By the use of my fashion analysis Mr. Cumberbatch looks like he's going out for a stroll in spring, since he's wearing a navy blue polo underneath a blue-gray peacoat. Blue is in this season, and the mix and match of the hue is trending.
Also, he seems to be going somewhere fancy, as the buttons show. A coat with brass buttons signifies an upper class-ness, as opposed to your standard plastic or horn button.
I've learned all that I know through GQ.

Your fashion deduction is very Holmes, actually! Although I was drawing from an actual coat he wore for some photo shoot. It's black, and the blue bit underneath was like a... tshh, it was like a pullover with a big rolled collar. It was nice! It looked very chic.
I have to google mackintosh and anorak coats. I'm all interested now!

Yes, do! Because of GQ I'm a little familiar with the jargon. Like the different kinds of outerwear like the parka, the trench, the peacoat, the hoodie, the anorak... But I still can't differentiate a blazer and a suit jacket; they look the same.
I'm quite surprised you over there in sunny Hawaii have a peacoat? And how's the rhubarb?

Oh, ha ha, well the peacoat I bought for when we go to visit our hometown in Ohio. It's been cold enough at night here for me to need a coat when I walk my dog, too, so it does come out the closet every now and then.
The RHUBARB, on the other hand, is scarce and thin! How I long for my rhubarb pie...

I found it in a thrift-store, and it's seriously the warmest and comfiest thing I've ever worn.
And re:hands - they're really, really tricky, and I think you pulled them off well here. One of the best feelings in art is when you manage to do something well that you know is difficult.
