I'll just write a few words of introduction and then i'll start writing the pros and cons of this piece.
First of all it really has a good impact, it's strong and the ride itself is very "intimidating" to say the least from it's size and structure.
Pros:-composition is good capturing both the ride and reflection, although i think you could of found a more powerful shot but then again i don't know your surroundings so i'll just say it's good as it is
- color wise it's all good , usually these rides inspire joy and fun but with the title it has it's appropriate because the ride is closed for the night and it actually is night or at least close to night time therefor the cold shade of blue is very appropriate
- you picked a good moment of the day/night those lights really add to the impact
Cons:
- it lacks originality there are many types of pictures with this kind of subject ... and some are really good experimenting with long exposures and capturing the spinning wheel that has light on and giving it a sense of motion
-i still have the sensation that you could of captured it with more "depth" to it , a more "brutal" perspective ... that it's a bit shy.(it might be just a sensation though)
-the reflection is a bit , dare i say "shaded" by the bright sky, if you don't look a lot at this picture carefully you can totally miss that nice reflection because of this, the sky should be just a shade darker.
Bottom line : very good piece just a few mistakes in the subtle post processing aspects.

To answer several points: The photo was taken years ago with a small point'n'shoot. At that time, I didn't even have a tripod so the only support to get a steady shot was the rim of the pool

no problem ... i was just pointing out what was to be pointed out ... you don't have to excuse your self ... i my self have only a point and shoot camera a canon powershot A590 IS ... so i know how it is to work with one ... and i also know a lot of photoshop i have several photomanipulations in my galery i also draw i have a recent one in my scraps ... so don't worry i don't judge by what you have but by what you do ... it's still a good shot.

When i saw this i was amazed. the mood of this piece is very deep and moving. It brings fourth memories of childhood and imaginary. First the mood is shown by the color blue. It makes me feel sad that its closed,the reflections of the lights against the water is magical. It has an haunting feeling but yet its not overly dark to be scary.
The sky is a pretty blue,while the rest are grays and dark blues. The contrast between the two are interesting. The lights against the sky and buildings is a nice touch. I love that Ferris wheel is off to the right and i love the composition of this picture.
In conclusion the mood is set wonderfully by the water,lighting,color,contrast,and the light lamps that enhances the Ferris Wheel and makes it intriguing to the viewer. how you captured it, makes it hauntingly beautiful and unique.
