Description A completely dumb (yet strangely kawaii!) drawing I did for a friend of mine, Jess, from college! XD She thinks Anubis is, in her words, "hawt"! (hot) ^^
Apparently Horus isn't much help when it comes to fangirls! ^^ Even mortal ones!

...........refreshing.
^.^ Thoth is neat too, ibis headed right?
i read all i could on Egyptian Mythology all thru middle school,
and still stop to drool over my history books in highschool.
Isis and Hathor are also pretty neato, but i dont care much for Osiris.

im prolly annoying you, no one here in town much cares for discussing mythology with me,
and my grandmother thinks its the devil....no lie.
^.^;

Linake In reply to Erislei [2006-05-31 15:59:19 +0000 UTC]

Haha, of course I do! I'm an Egyptian-mythology fanatic!! XD (See? Even my DevID has Thoth on it... *lol*)

Yep, he's the ibis-headed one (sometimes depicted as a baboon, too), but I never cared much for Osiris either... He just never did much... It seems that Isis & Horus did more of the work than he did, and even Anubis does most of the work in the underworld... ^.^;

And I know just what you mean! My whole family thinks Egyptian mythology is "evil" or "Satanic"... 9.9;; (*sigh*)

Haha, I agree, he's probably the most popular god of all of them! Horus is probably in second as far as "most fangirls"

And what about me! I'm probably the only person who has Thoth as a favorite...! Erk..Poor ibis-guy... *sniff* (Oh well, I'm putting him on my next DevID, so he's getting SOME attention at least! )

Ah, Thoth's my favorite... (hence the reason he shows up on my DevID... and on my notes from Abnormal Psychology... Erk, I should probably have been paying attention... ^.^;;;; ) Who doesn't love a god of artists & writers who has a sense of humor and looks like a hummingbird? XD

*makes a mental note to do more Egyptian-themed art*

sabertoothkitty In reply to Linake [2005-01-03 00:12:17 +0000 UTC]

Thoth has a sense of humor? Huh, never woulda guessed... I studied his character, and here are the notes I got:

"... (Thoth) was a sage among the gods, but his awareness of that fact made him pretentious and pedantic. His penchant for set speeches and his somewhat stilted solemnity could get on others' nerveswhen an urgent matter needed attending to. When (Ra) dispatched him to go see Isis, who needed medical help for her sick child, Thoth got bogged down in convoluted speeches so entirely out of place that the irritated goddess was provoked to the point of exclaiming: 'How wise is your heart, Thoth, but how slow are your decisions!'"

Funny as that is, there's another note that points it out better:

"Thoth was wise but boring, or even a wee bit pompous; he was also something of a con artist."

Can you tell I'm a bookworm? I like doing research before starting on a writing / art project, and I've done my share of Egyptian myth stories. Still, I like reading about them; for a Christian like me, they're practically book characters, and the stories written of them are quite amusing.

But, I'm blathering...

I like Thoth, as a character, because his qualities are somewhat like my own; I'm fairly intelligent, and I spend WAY too much time thinking than I should. Yeah, I like writing too... but I HATE math!!

Oh, and his head... It's a birdie!

Okay, I'm done now...

That is TOO FUNNY!! XD Hehe, poor guy's such a perfectionist... ^^

Yep, I believe I read about that con-artist bit as well... I believe I read somewhere that he's supposedly the one who conned Ra into making a deal to extend the number of days in a year from 360 to 365!

Just found the myth in one of my Egyptology books, here 'tis! ^^

"The Days upon the Year"
The myth is set at the time of creation, when the cosmological deities were coming into being. The sky goddess Nut was pregnant (following an illicit sexual encounter with the earth god Geb), but the supreme solar deity Re felt threatened by the prospect of the arrival of more gods and goddesses on the scene. He had convinced himself that his supremacy would be at risk if he did no take precautions, so he cursed Nut, preventing her from giving birth on any day of the year (which at this time still totalled 360 days)
As a result, Osiris, Isis, Seth, and Nephthys would never have been born if Re had had his way. Luckily for them and humanity, the lunar deity Thoth decided to intervene. By beating the Moon in a board game, he managed to win enough light to create an additional five days each year (referred to by the ancient Egyptians as the "days upon the year"). On each of these days, Nut was able to produce one of her offspring. To explain the existance of the fifth day, in this particular myth Nut is also said to be the mother of "Horus the Elder"

Yeah, heard that one...

Ra is a good character, too. Here we have a supreme deity... whose stubborn, jealous, and occasionally misguided (he had a tendancy to make rash decisions). I'm also curious as to why he never really stuck with a wife, since I've only come across two- Rayet (basically, a female counterpart of himself, which every male creator-god seemed to have) and Bastet (his daughter... )...

As a Thoth fan, who do you imagine is his wife? I'm partial to Maat, and other scripts list Seshat and Tefnut as wives. Or, do you suppose he's single?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Linake In reply to sabertoothkitty [2005-01-04 05:50:22 +0000 UTC]

That's a good question... I remember reading somewhere that he has a wife (has? had? ), and Tefnut kind of rings a bell... *scratches head*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sabertoothkitty In reply to Linake [2005-01-04 06:10:12 +0000 UTC]

I think Maat makes sense. She's said to be Thoth's counterpart, and they are related in their divine work (Thoth invented knowledge, and Maat keeps it correct and orderly).

Seshat was related to Thoth is various ways. She's said to be his daughter, sister, and wife.

As for Tefnut, I read that in an insert somewhere. The big story goes that Tefnut ran away from Egypt (for some reason I can't remember), and Thoth (or Shu) had to bring her back. One version of the story says that Tefnut would only go back to Egypt if she could marry him (which is odd, because she and Shu are supposed to be a couple ).

Well, in any case, it looks like Thoth really has a fondness for women. He's helped Isis numerous times (though I suppose that could be excused, since it was his duty anyway). Also, there is a version of the legend of Nut and her five children (I believe we discussed this), which says that an underlying reason Thoth helped Nut was because he secretly loved her. Hm... something to think about...

Has? Had? I dunno... as far as I'm concerned, I'm talking about fictional characters.

(no offense to any worshippers of the Egyptian religion. Keep in mind that I'm a Christian that merely writes an equilvilant of "fanfiction" about Egyptian mythology, so it's all a matter of perspective...)

I myself prefer Horus...Thoth is cool too, because he's a brainy boffin and I like that
What is it about An00bis (check out the 1337ness!!) that makes him so popular? Is it his 'goth-ness' as he's the god of the dead? Or is it because, as far as I know, he's still single? and who can resist a cute fuzzy jackal head?

btw Egypt r00ls and I love all the Egyptian stuff you've got. You should do more

For me, it's da fuzzy jackal cuteness. I mean, come on- a tall, lanky, semi-muscular dude with a dog's head? What animal lover wouldn't go for that??

Yay! Anubis!!

It's not that I don't like Noobie-don't get me wrong, he's awesome, but there are other Egyptian gods apart from Anubis...and he has waaaay too many scary fangirls like the ones in my xmas spoof thingy
And I feel sorry for mr parakeet-I mean Horus my bird boy!

sabertoothkitty In reply to Neopatra-Isis [2005-01-01 20:39:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know that... but come on- every other Egyptian god is married. Horus is cool, but think about it- if you were married to a love god(dess), would you feel any more comfortable with fangirls?
