I suppose not...it's funny, I haven't found any Egyptian myths where Anubis has a g-f. (Does he have one??) No wonder he gets all the fangirls and Osiris doesn't get any Isis wouldn't allow it!!! lol

Well, there are a few manuscripts that say Anubis had a daughter, Kebehut, who (I think) helped him with the mummification process. So, maybe he did have a girlfriend...
However, take into account that when explorers came to Egypt (after the Napoleonic wars), they had no use for the mummies they found or the papyrus that went with them, so they were burned for train fuel. It didn't occur to them that they could be used for study!
(sigh) So, unless we find a long-lost manuscript describing Anubis having a rendevous (sp?) with some chick, I guess we'll never know...

I haven't heard of Kehebut...makes you wonder who the mother was. One of the weirdest things I've heard about Anubis was that he was the son of Bastet 0.o lol a cat has a son who is a dog? I'd much rather stick to the Osiris-Nephtys parentage.
They burnt papyrus as fuel??? That is so damn disrespectful!!! I've heard that British troops in Egypt used the Sphinx and the Horus temple for firing practice, and of course, the sphinx's nose was shot off by either Napoleon or the Arabs, I'm not sure...

Well, they didn't know it was disrespectful. They just saw it as useless junk.
I haven't heard those theories about the Sphinx's missing nose. Huh, go figure...
Yeah, Anubis' parentage is really messed-up. Most take the position of Osiris/Nephthys, and the next common pairing is Set/Nephthys. Other mothers include Bastet (as you've said) and Isis, and other fathers include Ra.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again- Egyptian mythology alone could take up at least a few days of talk-shows...

About the nose, it's still uncertain what cause it to drop off. It could be Napoleon's army, it could have been the Arab invaders of Egypt who thought it was 'disrespectful to Islam' (apparently that's the theory most people agree with), it could have simply have been the wind and sand eroding it off. But the ones about it being shot off with a cannon are the ones in all the cartoons etc.
I've also noticed that a lot of Egyptian statues at a recent exhibition I went to had their noses chipped off deliberately, have no idea why though. I saw one stela stone in the british museum that had been reused in modern days as a milling stone for flour making-but it was covered with religious heiroglyphs.
Why oh why is Egyptian mythology so damn complex and contradictiory! I mean, I love it to bits, but sometimes it's just headache inducing-especially the geneaolgies and parentages of the gods...argh!! XD Reminds me of this book that I read saying that Horus was the son of Neith and Sobek, or Osiris and Hathor-not Isis! WTF??? And plus some gods have conflicting attributes-such as Osiris, who's a god of the afterlife and death, but also a god of fertility or plants which clashes with his death aspects, and so on. It's fascinating, but i'll stop now before I get a migraine... XD

Yeah, it gets so complicated sometimes... why couldn't the Egyptians make up their minds??
I actually have a possible answer to my own question.
Anyway... Egyptian mythology, when it was the "official" religion, was split up into cults (sorta like how Christian and Catholic churchs are split into differing denominations). Each cult was dedicated to a certain god, goddess, or triad (three-person god-family). For example, the Osiris cult seems to have been more popular than the Set cult, since most of the mythology we get from ancient texts describe Set as an enemy or a dangerous force to be reckoned with.
My point? Perhaps the differing origins were created by these cults to glorify their particular god/goddess. The Bast cult is probably responsible for the few texts we have stating that Bast was Anubis' mother. Likewise, the Sobek cult is probably responsible for the few texts the author could find stating that Sobek was Horus' mother.
(shrugs) Blah, it's so confusing... but that's why I like it- because you're allowed to have creative license.

Personally I have problems with the notion that Hathor (and not Isis) is Horus's mother. I'd stick to her being his girlfriend/wife. I'm surprised that she and Isis didn't have a rivalry between each other because they looked similar and have similar attributes...
Erm, Sobek is a god, so he can't be a mother XD but I had never heard of sobek being Horus's dad until I saw that book (mind you that book was pretty freaky and talked about aliens and stuff 0.o )I mean, a crocodile having a falcon son, doesn't make sense...lol then again, two human deities (isis and osiris) having a falcon son doesn't make logical sense either. Cynics would probably claim that it was a genetic mutation caused by incest as Osi and Isi were bro and sis XD but really I think the Egyptians gave their gods animal attributes because the gods represented things which could be represented by the qualities of the animal. Like Anubis the god of the dead was a jackal because jackals are scavengers that used to lurk around cemeteries (that's the theory I heard) and Horus the god of the sky was a falcon because they fly in the sky and are very powerful and impressive birds. And I have discovered something that made me understand Hathor's connection with music (or should that be moo-sic!
) and that is that cows produce more milk when they are played music. Makes sense now! I wonder if the Egyptians knew that?

Well, the cult thing is just a theory, mind you.
If the book was that diverse (having discussed aliens and such), then it's possible they got their facts mixed up.
Yes, the Egyptian religion is extremely nature-centered, and probably why it's so polytheistic, since each god represented only a few aspects from Egyptian life.
You're correct about certain aspects of the gods reflecting their representation. War gods- like Set, Sekhmet, and Upuat- were characterized with violent tendancies and/or vicious animal counterparts. Gods represented as cows- like Hathor, Isis, and Apis- were particularly important, since cows were the main form of livestock. Gods of family life- like Bastet, Tawaret, and Bes- were gievn outer characteristics that signified fertility.
