Description
A little taste of the color you can often see in the aurora. Tonight, things clicked, and I captured color that didn't register to the naked eye. It's usually the other way around, I see beautiful colors, but the camera doesn't. I think I might be getting the hang of this!!!
This series was shot near the Little Susitna River in Houston, Alaska.

Thank YOU for fav'ing this shot, and for adding me as well! I don't ever want to leave here, and this is one of the biggest reasons, (aside from the fact that most of my family and loved ones are here. I bet missing out on that quake was a relief, huh?

It was surreal...seeing the pictures of Fourth Avenue and the places that were flattened..the warehouse my dad ran on Elmendorf was flattened. We had several smaller tremors that year we left, some very scary, but nothing like the actual quake. Still, I would love to go back there, it remains one of my favorite places

Oh, I understand. I grew up in washington state (northwestern-continental U.S.) and never really had a clue what aurora were actually like until I moved here. I saw them truly for the first time as I was driving up the alaskan highway, and at first couldn't figure out what they were. We kept checking the map, trying to determine what the enormous city was that seemed forever just over the horizon. our map appeared to be outdated, as there were only a few tiny scattered villages shown, most of which looked deserted as we passed through. We finally began seeing the swirls and came to realize the light was aurora from horizon to horizon ahead of us. It was a very humbling experience. I pray you get a chance to experience them first hand someday, soon.

You mean the camera caught colors you didn't see with your naked eye? Is that even possible? o_o

When the color is light, and you're shooting with a long exposure, yes. The photos you see are shot with 16 second exposures, at f2.8. (the widest I can open my lens). If they were quick exposures there wouldn't be ANY light, nothing would show up at all. With the lens open for that long, the light kind of "piles up", and eventually it shows up on the camera. See how blurry the light streaks are? We don't see them that way, they're more jagged, and more transparent, but beacuse they're moving so fast, that's what the camera records, as wave after wave "paints" itself into the image. The colors in the upper right hand corner were so faint, they didn't show up bright enough for me to see, but as they danced around, the combined intensity of their passes was eventually enough to record.
I'm sure there are others who could better explain how this works, but I hope this helps a little.

Hah, ha ha...
I can understand that...
I hate being too hot though. I only lasted 6 mo in Arizona. I swear, I was melting from the inside out.
Actually spent a week in the hospital. Not from dehydration either.

Oh you don't have to worry about me stopping. Someone would have to rip my camera away to stop me. then I'd just go back to recreating them in other ways, lol!

The Northern Lights... I must say I envy you
I live to far to the south to have a chance of photographing them.
Well... during the time of increased solar activity, they tend to appear over Szczecin (53 degrees N) but it happens rarely. Not often enough to have given me a chance of seeing the aurora

they even have an alert system where they will email you when there is high levels of activity are forecast, if you sign up for it. I did, it's pretty handy!

Lucky bastard! I live in a city named Aurora and I still haven't ever seen any.
I heard about the sun flare that was causing all the aurora activity, even as far south as around me, but alas I'm soiled in light pollution and it was all cloudy. I didn't even get to see the Geminid meteor shower.
Nice shot, I like the little purple stream at the trailing end of this one!

Fantastic I tried shooting these last night too ...but with very little success ..I guess there was a huge solar flare that caused these ...they were quite spectacular here in Saskatchewan also

I used an f-stop of 2.8 at 100 ISO
and varied between 10-16 second exposures. (I have a tripod now)
It was a little too intense at 16 seconds at times, but for the most part that seemed to be the best setting. I'm pretty sure this was shot at 16 sec.
