Ooooooh man, where to begin...

In my digital drawing class we had a week to study an artist, learn their style, and then somehow make it our own, and I've been in love with Star Driver for a while and realized that Shigeto Koyama, the mech designer, was also behind the designs in Gurren Lagann and Eureka 7, all of which had styles I liked. So, I chose him and did a few copies of cybodies from the official page for a few days and thought "Well, while I can't draw mecha, this can't be too hard, I should know enough of it by now." I was wrong, and got super frustrated because it's one thing to know a style, another to design something in it, so I ended up getting frustrated and just doodling crap from my head which ended up being this sketch collection: [link] The little thumb in bottom middle (which was only an inch tall) ended up becoming the design I would go with. Quickly, the design and everything fell into place and I got to work.

Now, the coloring was a demon within itself. I had always loved that style of dynamic shading that Koyama's mecha usually get, but I had no idea how to approach it. Still I wanted to give it a shot rather than just doing a boring cell-shade like I normally do. So, I started on the face and then the arms, and before I knew it, I was starting to get a handle on how to do it. Two days and burning eyes later, I finished making the shiniest mecha under the sun. Honestly, this has to be one of the best coloring jobs I've ever done, and I'm quite proud of it. I considered sticking a watermark on it just to be safe, but I just...don't like doing that.

Other details:
Picture was originally 11x17, 300DPI (I was considering getting it printed but I ran out of time), and everything everything was done with only the pen tool, which meant it took an eternity to do--my eyes still hurt a bit from how long I stared at the screen. It looks beautiful at full resolution, but I don't really feel good posting it. Because this is the first real mecha I've ever designed, there are a lot of inconsistencies and bullshit perspective, but hopefully it's not too bad--I still have a lot to learn, and this was a fun study of stuff I normally don't do.

This is quite amazing! You really captured the style and you can feel the basic Cybody frame underneath!

Now you just need a Ginga Bishounen to drive it

I feel bad for never talking in class, but all you damn boys talk so much xP

But I know I wanted to say, this is really freaking awesome.
You seem to have the reflections down pat
It's so flashy and shiny I just wanna touch it~
Lol
I know you spent a lot of time on it, and it really shows.
The style may reflect the original artist, but it's not completely the same, which does give it a a stamp of your own work,

But crap man,
after seeing what everyone did in class Wed, I kinda wanna redo mine already, and I didn't even present yet x'D

Anyways, awesome job!

It's a pinch.

But in all seriousness, I love this. It's incredibly dynamic. It seems like this probably helped in understanding anatomy/3d/whateveryoucallit. Awesome job, bro.
