Description
The Battle for the Earth--
Back in 1992, a huge Meteorite fell out of the sky and fell in the Pacific Ocean, near the Ogasawara Trench. The affects of this Meteorite caused the awakening of two great rivals, in the world of Daikaiju. The Meteorite landed right next to where Godzilla was sleeping and woke him up from hibernation. Meanwhile the impact caused a large typhoon that swept all the way to Infant Island. It caused a landslide that uncovered a large, rather familiar looking egg.
About a Month later, Mr. Tobashi – now Prime Minister – and two others, went to a prison to talk to one Takuya Fujita. Takuya had been apprehended the previous month for attempting to steal a rare idol and causing the destruction of an ancient Temple. Tobashi was joined by Takuya’s ex-wife, Masako. They told him about the Meteorite and the affects it had. They showed him a satellite photograph of something large and white colored half buried in the Earth. The third of their group was Kenji Andoh, secretary of the Marutomo Company – the construction company that owned the island. Takuya correctly assumed that they wanted him to lead an expedition to the island to retrieve it. Even though he’d been offered freedom to do the job, he refused saying that he’d be released in another week. However, when Masako told him that for destroying precious historical remains his sentence was extended to fifteen years, he reconsidered.
At the National Environment Planning Bureau, Miki Saegusa claimed that she found where the Meteorite landed and discovered that Godzilla had been woken up. In addition to all the typhoons the meteorite caused, it also unleashed the most dangerous force of nature in the world. Godzilla was at large once again. But he wasn’t their only problem.
Somewhere in the Northern Arctic, the ice began cracking and huge blocks of arctic land were torn away. No one would be around to see it, but a large creature was released from an icy slumber; a very large creature, with dark, red eyes.
Takuya, Masako and Andoh left that morning from Bangkok. It was finally revealed to Takuya where they were going. A name all too familiar; Infant Island. He was just a boy when he first heard the stories of Infant Island and how Mothra came to Japan to fight Godzilla. But ever since the late 1960’s, Mothra had taken to living on Monster Island. Even when the Island was destroyed, she still lived with the other monsters on the new island they chose for themselves. She usually hopped from island to island after that, looking for Godzilla. But since she never returned to Infant Island, the Marutomo Company believed it was up for grabs. Besides around the time Godzilla was fighting King Ghidorah, they’d received reports that Mothra had died.
The three went to the island. They found the bridge that was built by the natives. They didn’t know it, but the entire population had been wiped out by the typhoon. Takuya believed that the bridge could support them all since they weighed only 180 kilos. However the bridge broke – this event made Dr. Alan Grant all the wiser in the 2001 Isla Sorna Incident, as he suggested that his group take the bridge one at a time. (See Crash Landing on Site B.) – and left the three of them hanging. They had no choice but to jump into the river, at which point, Takuya realized that they’d make their destination twice as fast if they flowed down the river.
They made it to the end in Andoh’s Ranger Raft; however they accidentally came upon the lagoon of a waterfall. Takuya suggested that they climb it, but Andoh suggested that they make camp. The next morning, Takuya discovered a cave behind the Waterfall. The three explored into the cave. They came across several cave paintings that Takuya deduced were at least several thousand years old. Masako found one interesting painting. The mural was of a familiar butterfly creature; it was Mothra! It was hard to imagine that the race of natives that worshiped Mothra existed for thousands of years. But Mothra was only one half of the Mural. She seemed to be in battle with another Moth-like creature, but this one was unrecognizable; it was darker and fiercer looking. (Had they traveled down another tunnel, they’d have discovered another mural of Mothra fighting a more familiar looking creature. But we’ve got twelve more years to get through before that.)
Suddenly the light pierced through the clouds and shined through a cut out of the Mothra Symbol in the cave wall. The light pointed them towards a tunnel that led outside. Once there, they found what they were sent for. But they didn’t expect to find what they did; it was a tremendous egg. Guessing that it was a dinosaur’s egg was quickly disbanded. Takuya knew that all three of them knew what the egg belonged to. But before he could state it, he heard two loud, synchronized, echoing voices call out his words.
“It’s Mothra’s Egg,” they called. “It belongs to Mothra.”
The group heard the voices come from what they assumed was a flower. But upon further inspection, two tiny individuals stepped out from behind the flower; it was the Shobijin!!! They explained that they were channeling ‘The Earth’s Cosmos’ – the force that keeps the Natural Order of the World in Balance. The Cosmos wanted to talk to human beings to warn them of the impending danger, and chose the Shobijin to voice its words, due to their involvement with the causes of danger.
The Shobijin explained that Mothra and her race were the Guardians of the Earth over 12,000 years ago. Even though Ghidrah had nearly driven them to extinction back in the Cretaceous Period, Mothra and her daughters managed to survive. Earth had advanced civilizations at that time, and the Cosmos was in perfect balance. But when scientists tried to control the Earth’s Climate, the Earth was offended and believed it was in danger. To protect itself, the Earth created the Black Mothra; a male creature, a ferocious and terrifying beast called Battra. Battra’s one function in life was to destroy what it perceived to threaten the Earth. He destroyed the climate controller, but also many nations of the Elias (Ancient Mothra worshipers the Shobijin descended from) that he believed also threatened the Earth. Soon after this, Battra was deemed uncontrollable as it was actually doing harm to the Earth itself.
Battra was often solitary, renouncing the other Mothras and keeping to himself. He was so fearsome and short tempered that he would even go as far as to attack them. The Mothras in turn, shunned him as well. But when Battra began attacking mankind, the lead Mothra was called upon to battle him. When Mothra defeated him, she and her daughters laid him to rest in the arctic. When the climate controller was destroyed, massive oceanic storms further proceeded to push the continents away and flooding land bridges between them. Mothra survived in the mountains.
The Shobijin explained that a year ago, when Mothra laid her egg, she felt a presence similar to Ghidrah die. Therefore she decided that she would lay dormant in her egg until the world needed her again. But the Cosmos explained that due to the Typhoons exposing her egg, she has woken up and become aware of the serious danger that the world was in. The Shobijin feared that alongside Mothra, Battra had also woken up!!!
The President of the Marutomo Company was overseeing development at the base of Mt. Fuji. He received a call from Andoh about the egg. They arranged for it to be loaded onto a freighter and pulled to Japan. Like others before him, he believed that Mothra’s egg would be a great public attraction. Andoh believed the Egg would be safer in Japan. The Shobijin put their faith in the human’s judgment. They waned to come to Japan to stay with the humans and go with them to Japan.
Back at the NEPB, Tobashi and Miki were monitoring a large creature in the ocean. It was long and serpentine. It was reddish in color and covered in spikes. No one knew what this creature was. They at first suspected Godzilla, but Professor Fukazawa, Masako’s superior received her report from the island. He had no doubt that it was Battra. The JSDF sent the Jets after it. They spotted it from the Tidal Waves it was creating. They had to do everything they could to stop it before it reached Nagoya.
They shot everything they had at the creature. Nothing seemed to work. The spikes along its back provided the perfect armor against their puny weapons. Soon, it reached the rocky shores and began burrowing into the cliffs. It dug like a mole underground. Soon a black cloud of dust appeared in the city near a large Pagoda. Buildings around the area went down and a huge yellow horn emerged from the ground. Tearing out of the soil was a large black caterpillar. Its body was armored. Its pincer jaws were lined with sharp fangs. Its two feelers on the sides of its mouth were more like tusks. It had two glowing red eyes, which were really composed of millions of smaller red eyes. It was long; its upper body area was able to stand upright thanks to two large claws underneath its body. While like this, the creature was about 300 feet tall. There was no denying that this was Battra, but what ever relations this creature had to Mothra could not be seen; this beast was something else.
It began laying waste to area around it, demonstrating its large variety of powers, differing from Mothra in her larval form. Its horn glowed bright and a beam of energy shot from it, wiping out the tanks that tried to stand in its way. From its red eyes, purple shots of electricity were fired. He quickly dealt with the laser tanks that were brought in. He knocked down the large tower and went on destroying the city. But eventually, the creature burrowed back underground…Where was it going?
On Infant Island, they secured the egg on a large towboat and began taking it back to Japan. They marveled at how huge it was. However, the captain detected something on its sonar, while the group listened to the radio broadcast of the attack. The radar sensed that something big was headed toward the ship. They looked out into the sea and saw it coming, huge tidal waves were made in its wake as it began rising to the surface. Suddenly a huge blue beam shot from the water. The group wondered what it could be. Takuya knew the obvious answer.
“It’s Godzilla.”
Godzilla’s tail broke the surface, and the rest of the Monster King rose with it. He began moving toward the freighter carrying the egg. Just like thirty years ago, he was planning to eat the egg. Takuya knew this and knew the egg was holding them back. He began unleashing the bindings that connected the freighter to the ship, even at the rejection of Andoh. After the two had a brief fight, Takuya succeeded, leaving the egg for Godzilla. All noticed that the egg was glowing. At the top, there were cracks in the shell. Soon a Mothra Larva broke the shell of the egg. Mothra was born again! Godzilla roared angrily, getting the caterpillar’s attention. Mothra turned toward Godzilla and for a brief moment looked happy to see him. But when Godzilla didn’t answer the calls she sent him, she got worried. You must remember Mothra’s Reincarnation abilities to retain previous memories. But Godzilla’s memories had been suppressed by instinct; in other words, Godzilla wouldn’t recognize Mothra, even though she recognized him. He shot his atomic breath at her. She fled the ship and dove into the water before she was hit.
Knowing that Godzilla was attacking her, Mothra swam around him and bit down on the tip of his tail. After a bit of flailing about, she eventually let go and was flung back behind the freighter again. Godzilla blasted at the freighter again, Mothra ducking behind it like a shield. The egg was nearly destroyed when he fired. Realizing Mothra couldn’t beat him by herself in larval form, she tried to immobilize Godzilla, hoping he’d calm down. She began spraying her webs at him. However, not much attacked to his body and Godzilla blasted at her again, this time hitting her. When Mothra went under, she sprang up from under the water like a dolphin, ramming right into Godzilla’s chest where she bit down with her pincers. Godzilla grabbed hold of her, and threw her away. She once again, landed behind the freighter. It looks like Godzilla had won.
Mothra began to try to swim away, but no matter where she would turn, Godzilla had her cornered. She was done for. That is until Takuya spotted something heading toward the ship. The Shobijin recognized it to be Battra. The ship was rocked about as his black form passed by; the big red spots on his back making him look even more fearsome than before. Up close, it looked like he was three times the size of Mothra! He swam into Mothra’s path, his horn going under her tiny body. When he reared upright, he sent Mothra flying away from him, towards Godzilla. Battra then shot his lasers from his horn, destroying the freighter. He attacked Godzilla. Takuya knew this would piss Godzilla off. Godzilla attacked back. Their adept use of ranged laser weapons kept the battle at a distance from each other. Battra went back underwater, and his body began emanating a bright glow. He then shot like a torpedo at Godzilla, upon the Monster King in seconds. They attacked each other at close range. Battra eventually knocked them both underwater. Godzilla still fought; his breath just as powerful underwater as it was above.
Mothra began to swim away from the scene while the two others were fighting. Andoh was upset at the thought of facing his boss empty handed. Takuya said that they needed to get out of there before Godzilla or Battra came back. Sparks of red and blue shot from underneath the water, signaling that the fight between the two titans was still going on. However, the captain detected something on the sonar. It was an undersea Volcanic Erruption. Godzilla had gotten a hold of Battra and was slamming him down on the sea floor. He threw Battra to the other side of their underwater battle field when suddenly, the ground began shaking. A red light emerged as the ground split apart. Soon, both Battra and Godzilla disappeared from the scopes. It was both assumed that they both drowned in Molten Rock.
The group went back to Japan, thinking that their troubles with Monsters were over. However, everything wasn’t over just yet. While the Shobijin were sleeping in the hotel room, Andoh, half-drunk, stole them and took them back to his company. Like others before him, the President believed them to be an attraction. Masako and Takuya immediately knew what happened. The NEPB immediately demanded their return, but the President insisted on keeping them. He wanted to make them happy and have them living in luxury; even going as far as making Andoh buy them the nicest most expensive doll house he could find. But the Shobijin weren’t satisfied, and still channeling the Cosmos, they knew that the danger wasn’t over yet. They needed to bring Mothra to Yokohama where they were being held hostage. They immediately began to sing their song. Like before, thousands of miles away on Infant Island, Mothra could hear them. She immediately began swimming toward Japan.
After landing in Tokyo, Masako immediately suspected that Mothra would come to Japan to save the Shobijin. Her attention however averted when she spotted her sister waiting for her. She also saw her and Takuya’s daughter Midori, ready to see her. She also sees Professor Fukazawa there. He explains to her that the meteorite has created a large fault along the Philippine Plate. It’s what caused the eruption that swallowed Godzilla and Battra. He was going to Mt. Fuji to check for any signs of activity. Masako then notices that Takuya has disappeared. While they were talking, he snuck away, not wanting to face his young daughter with the things he’d done.
He went to the Marutomo Company and stole the Shobijin. Andoh began to panic when he realized the Shobijin were gone. Takuya was planning to sell them for at least a million dollars…But then he cancelled any offers he was making. He knew he couldn’t sell them. While at Fuji, Fukazawa detects several large tremors. He knew that it was the cause of underground volcanic activity. Mt. Fuji was the only vent in the area. It was coming. Meanwhile, the JSDF finally detected Mothra on her way. Even though in the past, Mothra had proved to be friendly, she also proved to be just as destructive. The larva was big enough to cause severe damage. Ignoring Masako’s pleas, the JSDF set up Naval Blockades in Tokyo Bay to stop Mothra, saying that if she doesn’t stop, they’ll have to kill her. Masako claimed that like before, only the Shobijin could get her to stop. But the President of Marutomo claimed that the Shobijin were lost and he believed the NEPB stole them.
When Mothra reached the blockade, she didn’t stop. She kept going. Though the destroyers attacked her with all her guns, the sound of the Shobijin’s Song rang louder in her ears. She couldn’t stop. She destroyed whatever ships she had to do get through. She would be in Yokohama soon. Masako took a car and drove south to Yokohama, bringing her daughter and Miki Saegusa along with her. She sensed the Shobijin’s song was close. They tracked the psychic sounds to a hotel. They went inside and found Takuya. Midori asked him to return the Shobijin. It was nearly too late anyway, Mothra had already entered Yokohama. Andoh and Marutomo’s President watched her destroy the city looking for the Shobijin. Andoh said that it was them that brought the monster, but the President mocked him. He said that if Mothra destroyed the city, he’d rebuild it. Takuya said he wasn’t proud of what he was planning to do. He was going to return them. But soon, before they could escape the hotel, Mothra arrived.
Midori begged the Shobijin to stop Mothra. The group took them to a window when Mothra passed by the Hotel. They told Mothra that they were alright and asked her to not hurt anyone. Mothra thanked the humans for keeping the Shobijin save. She turned away from the Hotel and was preparing to return to the sea, when suddenly the military opened fire on her. Tanks and heavy guns shot at Mothra. Not as resilient to weapons as Godzilla was, Mothra called out in pain. Tobashi then called off the attack, knowing that there were still people in the Hotel nearby. When they ceased fire, Mothra looked in bad shape. Midori was afraid she was dying. Mothra slithered away and crashed against the capitol building.
The group joined the crowd surrounding the Capitol. The Shobijin calmed Midori’s fears, saying that Mothra’s Larval Stage was over. Over the Capitol Building, Mothra began spinning her cocoon. Meanwhile, Fukazawa received the reports that Mt. Fuji was definitely going to erupt. He evacuated the entire area. The Volcano began erupting by the time night had fallen. Marutomo’s President was distraught when he learned that the construction site where he was building the golf course was destroyed. Andoh told him that the Earth was getting its revenge against him for destroying forests. He then left. Unfortunately, there was more than just lava that appeared out of the volcano during the eruption. It was something that sent Miki’s psychic senses off.
“Godzilla…oh my God!”
Godzilla emerged from the top of Mt. Fuji. It should’ve been no surprise since he’d survived being trapped in Mt. Mihara. But the fact that he swam through the sea of molten rock – being at the very least 1500 degrees – was simply unbelievable. Now he was coming down the slope of the mountain. But instead of heading for Tokyo, he bypassed it and went south. He was headed for Yokohama. The JSDF began setting up as many defenses as they could spare. They wanted to change Godzilla’s direction and lure him back into the sea. Hopefully he would. But Godzilla kept pushing through the laser beams and the tanks. Nothing could stop him.
Soon, there was activity seen on the Cocoon. Mothra’s head pierced through the webbing, allowing her big blue eyes to see out. Strange sparkling powder was sprayed from the opening in the cocoon, making the sight all the more beautiful. Soon she completely crawled out of the cocoon and spread her wings. This Mothra was somehow different. In the past, Mothra’s fur was completely yellow. This Mothra was white; maybe it was because this Mothra was younger? Who knows? Soon, Mothra took to the air and began flying toward the sea. The Shobijin explained why she was leaving.
“Mothra will go find Battra and destroy Him!”
That meant Battra was still alive too?! They should’ve figured; if Godzilla survived it, why would Battra survive? Out in the ocean, a huge light shined underneath. It was caused by an explosion that occurred when something broke the surface of the seafloor from a volcanic vein underneath. Battra came to the surface and began swimming toward Yokohama. He sensed that Mothra had metamorphosed into her Imago form. He too would metamorphose to battle her. But Mothra had taken a full day to change; he didn’t have that time – and he didn’t need it. You see, Battra had never been reincarnated. The Battra that fought Godzilla was the same Battra that was created by the earth 12,000 years ago. Battra had been alive all that time. He’d learned a useful trick; the ability to transform his body into energy and take whatever form he wanted. He’d evolved past the need for the act of cocooning himself. His body turned bright red and became a ball of energy. It rose into the sky and then took the form of a large monster moth. Just as fearsome as he was in larval form, Battra was clearly more monstrous than Mothra. Now he began flying toward Yokohama.
Eventually, Mothra and Battra’s paths crossed. Mothra at first tried to fight him by ramming into him. But he Rammed her right back and much harder than she could. He then circled around her and chased her through the skies over the bridge. He fired his lasers at her. It was a foolish fight; this new Mothra – though with the memories of old – had just hatched from her cocoon and didn’t know much of her own abilities yet. Battra had thousands of years to master them. Their fight was all over the city. It wasn’t much of a fight but more like a chase. Eventually the pair flew over a theme park, where Battra shot Mothra down. It seemed that Mothra had been beaten.
Then suddenly, Godzilla appeared. Recognizing him from the fight earlier, Battra attacked Godzilla. Takuya, Masako, Midori, and the Shobijin went up on a roof to watch the battle. Even though Battra caused a building to collapse on him, Godzilla wasn’t killed. He used the atomic shockwave to break the rubble and grab Battra. When he had him, he threw Battra away and began shooting him with his atomic fire. Battra was grounded and couldn’t get up. Mothra saw this. Godzilla wasn’t being merciful on him; it wasn’t the Godzilla she knew from Monster Island. Godzilla hadn’t come to save her, it was here to fight and cause destruction. Mothra realized that Godzilla had gone wild again. Godzilla kept shooting Battra even though he was down. Godzilla needed to be stopped. She knew what she had to do.
She took to the air and fired two lasers from her antennas. It seems that this new Mothra had access to more abilities. She drove Godzilla off and knocked him down. She then landed in front of Battra, face to face with him. The Black Mothra was weary of what she was doing. But then her antennas began to glow. The Shobijin in turn turned the same color and began singing. Red particles of energy flowed from Mothra’s antennas to Battra’s horns, making them glow again. Mothra took more energy from the Earth around them as it showed when bolts of energy snaked up her wings. Purple energy surged through Battra, and orange waves began to pulsate through his wings. He began glowing as well. All knew what was happening; Mothra was giving Battra some of her energy to make him strong again.
Godzilla got back up and walked toward the two moths. Mothra took to the air to protect Battra. She began releasing her reflective scales on him – a stronger form of the yellow poison she used in their first fight. When he tried to blast her with his fire, it was bounced back at him. Yellow lightning arched from her wings. Mothra was winning. Godzilla was trapped. Battra looked at Mothra differently now. She saved him and gave him her energy. Now she was fighting to protect him. But then suddenly, Godzilla used another Shockwave and bounced Mothra back to the base of the large Ferris wheel. Godzilla blasted the support of the wheel and caused it to fall on Mothra. It would surely crush her. But suddenly, Battra appeared and caught it. He saved Mothra like she saved him. It meant that now, Mothra and Battra were friends.
Battra threw the Ferris Wheel at Godzilla, forcing him to the ground. Then Mothra blasted him with her laser beams. Battra did the same. Godzilla sprang up and tried to shoot them with his atomic ray. The two moths were fast and agile. They were able to hit Godzilla a lot more. They were also able to keep his attention on one, while the other attacked. But eventually, Godzilla did hit both of them. Mothra decided to end the battle. She flew in and began spraying her scales again. She shot lightning from her wings. Soon Battra came in and shot his lasers at the scales, making them hit Godzilla as well. With no way to escape or retaliate, Godzilla was trapped. This attack has gone on to be called ‘the Dark Echo’. Eventually, Godzilla fell over, unconscious.
Up in the sky, Mothra and Battra exchanged caws and roars. The Shobijin explained they were having a conversation. Soon Battra flew down to Godzilla and wrapped his legs around the Monster King. But the dinosaur woke up and bit down on Battra’s neck, making Battra’s yellow blood pour out. Mothra quickly grabbed hold of Godzilla’s tail. Godzilla blasted Battra’s neck with his atomic blast. But the two moths flapped their wings and took to the air. They began flying Godzilla out to sea. However, when the sun began to rise and the two just barely got out into the Sea of Japan, Godzilla blasted Battra again. The red light in Battra’s eye went dark, and his wings stopped beating. Battra was dead. Mothra couldn’t hold Godzilla by herself. She let go allowing both Godzilla and Battra fall into the sea. But before leaving, Mothra’s body began shining with energy. She left a large energy seal in the shape of the Mothra Symbol over the area where Godzilla was. Godzilla was sealed there.
Afterwards, Mothra landed at an airfield. The Shobijin told their human friends what they learned from Mothra. In 1999, a huge meteorite will impact with the Earth and destroy the planet. Battra was going to destroy the meteorite once it came. But now that he died, Mothra was going to fly out and change the course of the Meteorite, keeping a promise to Battra. The Shobijin then flew onto Mothra and the huge Butterfly took to the air again. She flew out into space, ready to protect the Earth as well as she could. The Humans knew that now they had to take care of the Earth as they remembered the Shobijin’s words.
“If the World lives to see another century, please remember what Mothra did for you and the Planet you live on!”
It was a surreal thing seeing Mothra fighting Godzilla again. After many years of comradeship, Mothra had to stop her ally in order to protect the world. Being in her presence didn’t bring any of Godzilla’s memories back. It seemed that the old Godzilla would never return at this point. When Mothra did return to Earth, she seemed to be much angrier than before. There were much more natural storms on the earth as well when she returned. The Shobijin went to Miki claiming that Mothra was angry at Godzilla for betraying her and killing Battra. They claimed that her anger was causing the storms on the planet. When Godzilla was released from the seal, she appeared and tried to fight him. But remembering the friendship she had with him, she returned to Infant Island. She seemed to be at peace again.
Interesting notes – When Mothra and Battra were taking Godzilla out to sea, their tradjectory was calculated to be out in the chain of islands near where Monster Island was. Another note worth mentioning is that when Battra did die, there was a strange fluctuation of energy from his body to Mothra’s. So it can be assumed that Battra transferred his energy to Mothra when he died. This information will come into play in the Mothra File. But I respect this file too much to ramble on about what I think about it. But I have a feeling that due to the Mothra’s reappearance, other of the old Monsters would pop up again as well.
Fortunately, the meteorite had one good affect on the environment. The Typhoons and Earthquakes that it caused allowed the human beings to uncover two large battle machines. Next time, Godzilla would fight another familiar opponent.
This is where it begins…The Beginning of the End.
