Description
At the foot of the mighty Snæfellsjökull, a 1446 m high stratovolcano at the western end of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland, lies the beach area Djúpalónssandur. Here you can see a landscape that has clearly been shaped by a volcanic eruption. The lava that flowed into the sea left behind extraordinary rock formations and structures.

On this beach one discovers the wreckage of the British trawler Epine GY7, which sank east of Dritvík Bay on March 13, 1948. Fourteen men died, five others were rescued by Icelandic search and rescue teams from neighboring towns. The iron ruins lie here to commemorate the fatalities.
