My grandfather was an artist. Larry Elmore had some to do with it as did some other artists along the way, but for the most part it's just practice.

Larry Elmore is one of the original D&D artists. My grandfather did bomber art during WW2, was a pilot, an architect, a cowboy, and a very big influence on me. Most of his art was Western, horses and cowboys.

Actually the problem with oil over watercolor is that you can't put glass or plastic over it. The oils have to breathe, but then the paper is not always flat. So it has to be drymounted or something... and I had one turn somewhat yellow on me at one point.
