Bale
Bale hesitated, first because he thought he would get a chance to talk, that maybe just telling the truth would do less damage than… this. Maybe things would turn around, still. Then he hesitated, because Milan was again playing his cards against him, and it hit hard. There wasn’t a day he wasn’t worried for Milan, with everything going on and seemingly falling apart around them. He had wanted to believe they would be okay, that he shouldn’t try to be a protector every minute of his existence and forget everything else. But he did feel guilty about it.
He opened his mouth, ready to defend himself, but as the words kept hitting him he clenched his jaw shut. He leaned back, but his feet didn’t move. He hated the powerless feeling when Milan stepped closer, but he couldn’t do the same if he didn’t want to scare him. If they had been in Onea, this could have been settled with quite literally bashing heads, and then moving on. It would have been so much easier than tripping over words, time after time.
There was deep hurt in his pale eyes - he looked almost dismayed that Milan would say such things out loud. Was it any more or less fair than his slaver comment? Probably not, but to Bale it was more significant. Just the thought of Milan being with someone else was like a forest fire inside his chest, one that his blessing could not offer to heal up.
“I can’t give you anything at all, huh? Then why the fuck are you even bothering with me? Because I’m a kirin?” he snarled, his voice guttural and nostrils flaring, ears flat against his skull: “Is that it? I’m worthless to you unless I’m sitting around being a good little trophy?”
Every word out of his mouth was like he yanked a piece of his heart out and stomped on it.

Milan
He liked being on the offensive - it made him feel strong, even in the face of someone as big and physically capable as Bale. He knew he had the advantage in many ways: Milan was older, better educated and on his home turf. Bale might have been a kirin, but he was new to Aodh, and not used to fighting with his words - that much was quite obvious.
“I don’t know. Maybe because I thought we were in love? But clearly that’s not the case for you”, Milan hit low again, more focused on winning an argument than anything else. The original reason for his anger, the fear of Bale cheating on him, was still on the back of his mind, but the argument itself wasn’t really about that anymore.
But the last words hurt more, and Milan felt hot rage and tears at the same time.
“Yeah, maybe it is too much to ask for you to spend time with me”, he choked out, before stepping closer, again, and jabbing Bale in the chest with his hoof - not painfully, but certainly enough for the kirin to feel the pressure. The touch was accusatory and sharp.
“How rude of me to assume that a sparkling, special creature like you would stoop to the level of us regular mortals, and actually want to maintain a relationship”, he hissed, inches away from Bale’s face. He can barely see his ugly scaled mug with his vision blurred from tears, but Milan doesn’t let that stop him.
“It’s not like I house you, and pay for everything you have, and try to help you get connections. I’m the one using you, obviously. You are Ignacio’s chosen Lightbringer after all. What do I know”, Milan goes on, backing off and turning his back to Bale.
