At first glance Liliai usually appears as a well-mannered, quiet young mare. She is generally shy towards strangers, and doesn’t necessarily initiate conversations unless spoken to, or unless she feels it is necessary for the well-being of the other. She tends to be very agreeable, even overly so, watching for tones and hints for how she should act.
But beyond that outer surface Liliai is actually very lively and easygoing, and goes from just saying the bare minimum to blubbering almost nonstop rather easily. She is eager to know anything and everything about others and the world around her, and if allowed to step out of her discreet manners, can get even overly inquisitive. She is, by default, very active and impatient, but usually well-mannered enough to wait for her turn. But if you give her your little finger, she will want the whole hand, preferably yesterday.

Liliai tends to constantly mirror others, and can get easily tangled up if dealing with less than honest individuals. She is almost too honest herself, and never tells straight lies – at best, she can leave something unsaid. And by extension, she is also inclined to believe what others say, and believe the best out of everyone. She is a doe-eyed, innocent little creature, and terribly bad at weaving together double meanings and the words between the lines.
Liliai is generally submissive towards anyone older or more experienced, and only gets pushy if she gets overly excited, usually about something new and inspiring. Overall, she appears juvenile and inexperienced for her age, which is often apparent the second she opens her mouth.

Liliai is bad at setting boundaries, and if asked to do something, will usually try to comply. She hates disappointing others to the point of sacrificing her own well-being, and is easy to get to bend over backwards by just being nice. And even if treated badly, she is quick to forgive, and tends to easily blame herself rather than others.
She is sensitive to everything around her, and has not yet learned to build any type of a wall between her raw emotions and others. Especially the feelings of others tend to affect her greatly, and she has sometimes hard time distinguishing her own feelings from those of others.

There's far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round

History:
Liliai’s father, Adir, was an older stallion, who had managed to win over and gather multiple wives and held a firm hand in his slave trading business in Magmire. Adir mostly purchased fresh batches of vagabonds or other unlucky souls, and made them decent enough to trade onwards. Their life wasn’t flashy nor luxurious, but the income from slaves was enough to keep food on the table for a large family.

Liliai was born on a sunny morning, and her mother Rania was delighted. Rania was a young bride, and it was her first foal – something that made her feel like her spot in the family was more firmly rooted. Liliai had multiple older half-siblings running around, so it was easily ensured she never had to spend a moment alone.
Adir was siring more fillies than he was colts, save for his eldest son Nikolas. Liliai always adored her older brother – in her eyes he could do no wrong. He was so brave and strong, and free in a different way than she was, or so she thought. They grew up forming a strong, warm sibling bond.

Upkeeping a large family in a rural area also meant that helping around was mandatory as early as possible, and in result Liliai learned household chores from early on. Liliai never questioned her role in the family for it was something she was raised with from her birth, but her lively nature did crave for more action and adventure.
Whenever Liliai pushed her boundaries or sneaked out when she was supposed to be doing some tedious task, she was strictly reprimanded. Adir had a short, fiery temper, and ruled his household much like he ruled the slaves he bought – loud, and whenever he deemed necessary, violently. To an outside eye the family seemed normal enough, his wives both scared and having learned to accept the situation. Adir was, after all, a good provider, which wasn’t all that easy to come by in such a small place. They found it easy to tell themselves that their husband also had good days, and good qualities, and Liliai, too, learned to consider this normal.
Her brother was pretty good at getting her out of trouble, and out of the house for fresh air when things got to be a bit too much. The atmosphere had turned Liliai shyer and compliant, afraid to act out. And when her beloved brother left for New Valore after a fight with their father, Liliai felt like all the joy was sucked out of her life.

A turning point for her was when she became sick one winter, and had to stay with the village’s healer, Ramano. He used herbs, weird old rituals and other ascetic means for the process. Liliai found the herb-smelling, almost spiritual world fascinating, and once she was better she started to fake minor injuries and sicknesses to get to speak with Ramano again. Her parents finally caved in, tired of the hassle, and Liliai was permitted to gain mentoring from the healer, and learn to become a healer herself one day. Despite his earlier reluctance Adir soon found his daughter’s growing skills useful, and after she had gathered some know-how, she was allowed to help patch up the slaves in training. Liliai loved her studies and helping others, but what she did not enjoy was the fact that with a healer around, her father was sometimes even more aggressive with his means, despite Liliai being a mere trainee.
Liliai begun to spend more and more time away from home, and stayed with Ramano more often than not. She was like a sponge, gathering all bits and pieces of information she possibly could. There seemed to always be new things to learn.

Whenever Nikolas would visit, Liliai toyed with the idea of leaving with him to the grand city her brother would always tell about. She loved hearing all about it, all the stories and adventures her brother had lived. She was, however, always too scared to take the leap. She kept saying that she would leave once she had a bit more experience under her belt, a means for making a living in a new place.
But fate had something else planned. One day, there was a large shipment of new slaves and everything was just fine, and the next… Destruction. First came a wave of animals – the sound of them was enough to send villagers running out of their houses to see what the deal was. Next, rumbling, and the volcano was spewing lava and ash. Everyone was in panic, some trying to gather at least some belongings, other just running for it at the first sight of danger. Liliai had been out gathering herbs, and got pushed aside by fleeing horses when she tried to go back to find her family members, and just a moment later she had no other option but to run.

The ash burned in her lungs and panic rang in her mind, and she ran for cover as fast as her legs would carry. It was soon apparent that there was no home to go back to, and she had gotten completely detached from the rest of her family, unsure if they were even fine. Liliai was terrified and upset, and not wanting to be left alone in the middle of nowhere, she tacked along with the first horses that would have her – they were Merchants, and going to New Valore. While Liliai was still terribly worried about her family, a thought of finding at least Nikolas was reassuring. Surely her brother would know what to do.
And sure enough, having heard about Oriel erupting, Nikolas met her half way, making sure she was fine and demanding she go to New Valore with him. Liliai clung to Nikolas like he was the lifeline and she was drowning – he was the only thing she had. Even though she had heard stories about the city, it completely blew her away. So many grand buildings, so many colors, so many horses… After the initial shock subsided, Nikolas helped her to get in contact with Edith, Aodh’s most esteemed physician. Liliai found the meeting intimidating, but after swearing she was willing to learn anything and truly wanted to become a good doctor, Edith promised to provide mentoring. Liliai took it to heart, and has been getting used to her new life and learning new things every day.
