Baldo is a male snowy owl. He is picky about who he likes, will nip at those not to his liking and be cuddly to those he likes. Likes to hitch rides on Mert's horns.
Mert received Baldo just before he left for Skeldr town before Chapter 5, to look more like an actual Weather Witch for better first impressions.
Family:
Father: Stigr, NPC
Mother: Runa, NPC
Grandmother: Irileth
Health: Mild haemophilia (type A) - passed down from mother's side but undocumented before Mert
This means blood clotting is reduced, but spontaneous internal bleeding will not happen. Cuts will bleed longer than usual, but clotting does eventually happen, and minor cuts are generally not an issue. Other symptoms include easy bruising, joint pain, nosebleeds, headache and fatigue. Generally, quality of life is steady, and the condition is not life threatening by itself, but injuries need to be avoided.
x Stocky, round cob-type build, fairly straight profile and fluffy feet
x Mane and tail are coarse and fluffy, generally very hard to do hair-dos in
x Smooth ram horns made of brown jasper
x Rabicano areas 'roan out' more during winter, colors are more vivid during summer
x Mert's bow is crafted partially from the iron of "Crooked Smile", a warhammer that Irileth's husband wielded to battle, and retains some of it's characteristics. This weapon was commissioned by Irileth from a local craftsman at Sunken Hoof Bay before Irileth and Mert departed for Skeldr town. +10 Strenght Imbuement. -Proof

Mert is a good boy wishing he had what it takes to be a bad boy sometimes. A warrior at heart, but not one physically. He is ambitious, but quiet about it. He wishes everyone knew his name, but settles to be a contributing member in his herd. It is extremely important to him to be useful, and he is often self-conscious if he is contributing enough. At first encounter he is always polite and considerate, and knows to make himself scarce when he is not needed or wanted. He does his duties with precision, and never needs to be told twice about anything. Around a household he acts much like stereotypical mare would, but absolutely hates to be considered feminine.
He has been taught to see patterns and understand how things work on many fields; weather, battle and inside the heads of others. He can spot the tiniest alteration in the weather, and sometimes seems like he speaks the language of nature itself. Mert relies on solid thinking and observation, having learned to trust logic over feeling. He knows he often feels too much, and it makes him reserved in company. He wants to act like he is content, even confident, even if he is not. His current position is not a very masculine one, and while he knows it is what he must do to get by, he is very jealous of those that are more capable than him. He often feels like he doesn’t belong, and is made rather cynical by generally anticipating being looked down on.
Due to his shortcomings, Mert has learned to be very resourceful. He is a quick thinker, and not afraid to explore new paths. His body might have its limitations, but he makes up for it with his mind and its capabilities. For a War Forged Mert is rather scholarly due to being raised by his experienced grandmother Irileth, and keen to learn more. Mert asks many questions, but never obvious ones. He wasn’t allowed to test his bodily strength much growing up, so he likes to poke around in the minds of others. He greatly enjoys being good at something, and gets very competitive if it is something he excels at.
History:
Mert was the firstborn son to a fairly new marriage, a true blessing, they thought. His parents, Stigr and Runa, were a Merchant and his wife, living their life semi-permanently in Sunken Hoof Bay, sometimes travelling with wares. At first, everything was great. Sure, Mert got quite many bruises as he learned to control his long, scrawny legs, but he was the first foal for the pair, so they didn’t think to consider it unnormal. Kids play, stuff happens! Mert was just brushed off and sent right along like any foal would have.
He attended Caenna’s teachings when those were available, and started building up his very basic skills and knowledge. Mert was a bright boy, good at thinking quickly and rather interested in the very basic education given, always asking more questions.
Like any healthy boy, he also wanted to play with others. Sparring with other boys and learning to establish their roles in the society was as important to Mert as any child. But it seemed to always be him that got banged up too badly, considering. His nose would bleed, he would tire out, any cuts would seem to drip forever, his legs would swell if he banged them… This understandably worried his parents, and Medics were confused. Mert would come to see many herbal remedies and styles of bandaging him up. Surely these will help! But none of them really did.
Desperate, Stigr would reach out. He asked around from pirates if they’d seen a talented Medic on their journeys, and during his travels he kept inquiring. During his early childhood Mert mostly stayed with Runa in their home and Stigr travelled alone, coming back with stories and shards, or wares he’d traded for. In an attempt to find out what was wrong, Mert was eventually brought along, and then all the way to Skeldr town. The road was tough, but in an ableist society Stigr felt like he absolutely needed to find a cure. It was a heartbreaking thought that maybe his son would not be a strong independent stallion one day, one he was not willing to accept.
There were no magical answers to be found in Skeldr or the surroundings. Many Medics looked at Mert, and many were intrigued as well. He was poked and examined, and many things were tried, he even stayed a while with one of the Medics. All they could tell that there was something wrong with the blood, but not exactly what. It was suggested that Mert would not participate in rough play, and would focus on things less physical.
The mood was grim when the family returned the long way to the Sunken Hoof Bay. Runa was confident that they could still raise Mert, and they could find him a way to contribute to the society. To Mert, it was rather crushing. He wanted to play, he wanted to go out, he wanted adventures! His dream was to become a Raider, a real warrior.
One day he sneaked out; he knew other kids often gathered around for a good sparring practise, and he was determined to show everyone that he could still do it. It was an unfortunate thing, a wooden sword broke during a play battle, and as it broke the blade slipped and hit his thigh, the splintered edge cutting surprisingly deep for a toy weapon. Under normal circumstances it would have been just a rad little battle scar, but in Mert’s situation it was worse. The bleeding was heavy, and a Medic had to pull quite many tricks out of their sleeve to patch him up.
This was too much for Stigr. Mert was a constant worry, and he doubted an immature, young stallion would learn quite enough from this. He made the executive decision that Mert was to go and live with his grandmother, Irileth. While Mert really liked Irileth and her many stories, he was feeling truly abandoned. Irileth agreed to take care of Mert, and did her best to make the sullen pre-teen feel better.
Mert was bitter. It wasn’t fair. But Irileth was good at guiding his attention and giving him other things to think about. She began to teach him many valuable things; about the weather, but also about tactics and things much deeper. Mert learned to read, not only books but situations and equines. He, too, could be useful. He might never be on a battlefield, but he could help. He picked up many hobbies during his spare time that didn’t put him physically in danger - he could do many kinds of small crafts and take care of a home.
Living with only Irileth and being restrained by his mystery illness, Mert grew up much like a mare would. He wasn’t happy about it. He wanted to be a big strong stallion, but in time he learned to somewhat accept his place and limitations. He got good at hiding the hurt when other young stallions would call him mean names or just look at him funny. Instead being defeated by it all, he chose to be ambitious in his own way. Observational skills, logic and rational thinking are what he relies on to get through his days.
When the blood red sails appeared and Irileth got called to Skeldr town, Mert immediately wanted to go with. He wasn’t done learning and felt like now, if ever, he would have a chance to prove he was worth something.
x Officially Mert is a Weather Witch, still in a somewhat apprentice stage, but he is more interested in becoming a good tactician
x Currently is tagging along with Irileth
x Mert is in a fairly good shape as keeping good muscle tone helps with his condition, but he cannot participate in anything too hazardous
x Has learned from Irileth to support the War Lord Hira and hate Bloody Flanks, even though he has had no personal contact with them
x Teke color is caramel brown
x Voice actor is Ed Sheeran
