well I want to paint portraits and kind of suck at it so I found a picture of a cute girl on the web and decided to painted it as training, here you see the result of this training and I must say Im technically really satisfied (ok the hair is kind of...idont know... sloppy) BUT I dont see it as an "new work" by me its more of a succesfull training session....

ooooooooooooooooooooooooo, pretty. no, seriously, she's stunning, and I like her hair, it makes her look more real, other wise she'd look idealised, more like a porcelain doll than this young hott thing, teeheehee.

I love the fact that your paintings have that monochromatic element which makes them seems so classical....I was wondering if you do an underpainting or just paint it all on a black board - or what you do? your style is the opposite of an amateur look, I like seeing it unfinished, and personally, I'd like to see more of the looser more "sloppy" technique as you call it.

the eyeballs work pretty well but you could push them a little further toward realism by noticing the little gummy part on the inside corner... [link]

Also when it comes to eyelashes and eyebrows i've noticed recently that the implication of such things is much more powerful than actually painting them. Look at a rembrandt, more often than not he didn't so much paint the eyebrows but the browline (the ridge on the skull)... and in places he hinted at the eyebrow but seldom painted it outright. Similarly, eyelashes were rarely ever seen singularly... sort of a hazey darkness outlining the eye did that for him.

and as far as my personal tastes go for painting in general... my advice would be don't be afraid of leaving your fingerprint behind. Let us see some brushstrokes in that skin. Maybe just thicker paint in the earlier layers would give the surface enough interest.

i don't think that you should worry about the hair. it looks dissonent in a good way.

her face is lovely and hair too i just love all that and the eyes. . .
but i cant help say its her hand that steals my eyes from her beautiful face...
the fingers look like they just disapear into the air and the palm of her hand looks swollen?
I suck at painting skin and humans and hands...but i can allmost draw them with a pencil, ive practiced hands much, i dont even know why hands especially but thats maybe why i noticed the hand like that.
But other than that, thats one . . .hell of a great portrait! Dyeap i like it! much! and i love yer sneaky lil clouds too

It's very well done as practice, but I dont find this is interesting as your usual work is.
Your obviously master your tools, so what ? Except if you goal is to sell -this could be a good sell - or have success as daily deviation ( for that, kittties are even more reccommanded than cute girls ). But beiing experimental is something that I understand, and approve. May be a more interesting experriment for you could be to work with a living model in front of you ?
Or an experiment on how art is perceived here on DA ?
May be you can consider that my words are very harsh, since this is a good job in it's own way. But this is not my intention, on the opposite it is out of esteem for your work.
Just beleive me, having favs on what you condiser training session could be more harsh...Hope you understand my point.

I Agree... thats why I call this painting practice its more of a study or a test to see what I have learned over the past 4-5 years Ive been painting with oils so its nothing I would have with me on an expo or something and the reason for doing this is to be better of painting the likeness of a person so I can do a better result with a live model

I am glad you understand my point and you agree, english is not my native language and I am always afraid of misunderstanding on delicate matters. Of course studiying, working, praticing is good. But I think here on DA ther is a rampant
tendency to accept technical skills in place of art. I really like your paintings on your gallery. They have soul.

dont be afraid to be misunderstod English isnt my native language either Technical skill is a tool you can use, being good technically doesent mean you are an good artist (so I think you and I agree on that)...but it can be help you alot to be able to draw realistic, rigth now I want to paint people, portraits and so on but I lack in technical skill to paint with a model so I need this practice, It would be silly to as a person to be a model and not being able to draw them correctly

The facial tones are absolutely amazing...! Though her head seems to be floating on her neck rather than it being connected. Still this is far better than any attempt at a portait that I can do. Great work!

i think the face and hair look awsome but the hand is by far the area that needs the most attention or practice. the face is quite lovely though

You did a great job for this to be a practice. The face looks a bit out of place, though, just because the lines are so sharp and even in the face and everything else has a bit of a blurry outline. But overall, I think you did a wonderful job!

liquidclouds In reply to phoenixphyre [2005-03-29 22:46:40 +0000 UTC]

"The face looks a bit out of place" I agree on this... its my patience , well having painted very sharp and detailed in the face I lost my patience on the hair (+ I need some more practice on hair) making it kind of sloppy

phoenixphyre In reply to liquidclouds [2005-03-30 00:00:35 +0000 UTC]

Understandable, it's easy to lose patience on any work that takes a long time. I still say you did a great job on it, though
