Description
Part of my "Silver Screen Legends" series. The scan of this sketch came out horrible, so I did some very minor touch up and adjustments digitally. Next I have to smooth things out and color this digitally.medium: Derwent pencil
reference : photo by George Hurrell

Thanks! What a coincedence, so am I . heh heh! I really want to finish this, it's just that time is so scarce. Ah well, I have a couple of partially colored WIPs in my Scraps section.

Even though I'm a swede and all, I think Greta Garbo is annoyingly overrated. The expression she has in your picture is something she kind of used everywhere, and I think that kind of says it all.
The picture is neat though. Very well drawn, I would've liked a little more even-coloured, and darker "hat" though.

VERY NICE! I actually saw your video on YouTube first, then followed the link here...I was going to say something about the photographer, because I noticed at the begining of your video that I had said Thomas Hurrell...and being the Garbo afficionado I am I KNEW it was George Hurrell (not to mention I own a poster sized picture of Garbo from this same sitting she did with Hurrell for promotions for the movie Romance) But I see you got that settled, he he...very nice work, and I mean it!!!

Thanks. Yeah, I don't know why I credited Thomas Hurrell, but yes I fixed it. Glad you like the piece so far.

this is just stunning.
is that how you do a lot of your pieces? pencil drawing, smooth, color digitally?

Thank you . Most of my pieces are done that way, but now that I have a tablet I generally sketch completely on the computer and then color.

it's a great technique makes the piece chock full of texture

How do you get proportions down so well without a grid of some sort? Though, I never use a grid, it takes me quite a while to get proper proportions.
I'm surprised you didn't use a blending stump or any of the other stuff most artists use.

Well, first of all, don't be fooled by the video. I didn't complete this piece in under 10 minutes (it actually took me around 14 hours. I draw very slow because Iwhen I use a reference photo I "eye" it for a while to gauge correct proportions and values. I stopped using grids in when I was in high school.
I used to blend with my finger (occassionally still do), but I found that pieces come out much nicer and fresh when I don't and instead shade with the pencil and avoid the "smudge" look. And I do use a kneaded eraser from time to time for highlighting and lightening of values..

Depending on the type of face, I usually use a tissue. Gives a better softer type of look.
And it takes me a looong ass time to get the proper proportions. The two main reasons I never used a grid was because:
a) I want to be able to do it without a grid.
b) I'm lazy.

simply incredible. Even though its WIP, the detail you've acheived is amazing - looking at the thumbnail I thought it was a photo!

A happy mistake. I don't try to do photo realism, but I don't complain when it happens. Thanks, haywood!

Thanks, Brie! You know what's weird? A friend pointed out this observation to me after seeing my list. Remember Madonna's song "Vogue" ? I'm doing each one of the legends she mentioned in that song (plus two others).
Thought that was weird because I wasn't inspired by that song, but instead by the song "Bette Davis' Eyes"
Glad you liked the video! Might do a tutorial series one day.
