let me get this straight... you're playing me?Severus Snape meets his film equivalent and disapproves greatly. Hell, I would too. A 36 year-old skin-and-bones man being played by a late 50's gent with a burgeoning fondess for cakes? So wrong.

Yes, I have to agree, Alan is definitely chunky compared to Snapey. (Alan is way more handsome than Snape is too.) It makes Severus a different person from the books in a way. It's Alan's voice and acting ability that was great for Snape.
I think I read that JK loved Alan as Snape. So if she good, I'm good. But still, Alan's not my head cannon.

What I love on this is the skintone difference and nose shape. No matter how canon Alan is to Joanne Rowling, he does not look the way she described the Snape character with his sallow, yellowish skin, stringy greasy hair, slight frame and a very huge beak-like nose.

Well, not really. JKR picked Alan Rickman out specifically, so he sort of has to be cannon. Though I agree that he doesn't fit the description exactly, he does play it perfectly. Besides, as much as we as a fan base love to pull out our own ideas and interpretations, we really do need to remember that this is HER character, not ours, not Warner Brothers, not even Alan Rickman's- hers. So however she wanted wanted him, it's perfect.

a burgeoning fondness for cakes? Alan Rickman was middle aged when he started playing Snape, and now he's in his sixties. What the hell do you think happens when you age? Your metabolism slows down, and in the case of Rickman, you become a sexy bad-ass.

hahaha, well yes. I think one of the other reasons us canon-freaks have an issue with Rickman as Snape is BECAUSE he's a sexy badass. One of the many joys of canon Snape is that he's an awkward-looking, greasy-ugly badass, and we're crazy enough to love him that way

You have no idea how much it irritates me when I say I'm a Snape fan and I get "oh so your a Rickman fangirl eh?"
That makes me want to slap people seriously.
Rickman has the perfect voice for Snape but thats about it.
The way I see him in the books is completely different then how Rickman looks/moves/dresses...
This illustration makes me very very happy... I've tried to explain how I feel about the casting and how book Snape is nothing like movie Snape, and everyone I know disagrees and just swoons on and on about how Rickman is perfect for Snape... -.-; I mean he's cool and all but.. *sigh*

Heh, that's damn right... I'm a late HP reader (still not ready to use the word HP-fan), and my imagination has been influenced by the movies, even if I haven't seen them. By all means, I like Rickman, but because of him it took me very long to realize that Snape is actually only 36 in The Order of the Phoenix, and till I got rid of the weird picture of Snape that popped up in my head after the book's description mixed up with Rickman's age and looks-_-"

Yeah, I'm one of the few who actually prefer book Snape. Don't get me wrong, Alan's hot as hell, but lately he has a serious case of William Shatner syndrome (Just look at some pictures of him as Captain Kirk on Google then look at how he is now). Sigh, must add to faves, just for humour purposes.

I agree with your casting assessment. Then again, Gary Oldman didn't look a thing like how she described Sirius Black. (The way she described him sounds more like Marilyn Manson than Gary Oldman.)

The only thing I thought was really weird about Oldman is he seems too small. (Unless Thewlis is really huge. I don't know a thing about him, so I don't know.) I know Sirius got skinny in Azkaban, but did he get shorter, too?
Now, I've thought Marilyn Manson would make a good HP character, but most likely as Voldemort. That I would like to see.

Sounds pretty spot-on to me.
Fangirls pissed and moaned about Oldman being cast for Black because he didn't fit in to what they thought Black should look like (which by all accounts sounded like some glorified Ken doll). I thought it was spot on, just like I thought Thewlis as Lupin was spot on.
Then again, I like to go against the grain of fandom opinion. heh

Yeah, I totally like Oldman as Sirius, too. In Book 5 they described him as really handsome in his teens, and if you go on a search for young Oldman pics...he ain't too bad looking! So I definitely agree with you.
A lot of fan gals seem to get Sirius confused with Lockhart...Lockhart is the one that's supposed to be the Ken doll LOL.

Great interpretation of both. It does disturb me that Rickman is a helluva lot older than his character should be, but Alan is just so perfect acting wise.
BTW, Tim Roth was supposed to play Snape, but had to back out (can't remember why). Do you think he would've been better?

I am so glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks Rickman is a bit old and plump to be Snape. The man is obviously an amazing actor, since for the duration of the films I can manage to overlook it. But when I look at some of the film stills, I'm thinking he looks more like he's Sev's father, not Sev.

Ah, the great Tim Roth misinformation continues to spread.
When the original casting 'wishlist' was put together, Rickman was listed down for Snape (at Rowlings request). Columbus and the producers, however, didn't ask him because they were sure he'd refuse. Then they asked Tim Roth who couldn't do it due to scheduling conflicts, so they ended up asking Rickers anyway. Then he played them along like a fiddle for a couple of months before agreeing to it.
And lo, there ends that tale. heh
I don't know what's happing with Rickers in regards to his acting. He's turning into more and more of a Hammer Horror camp panto villan with every passing role.

My position is that if you could somehow transport Rickers from his Obadiah Slope period twenty years forward into the current day, then you'd have a walking, talking Canon!Snape. But now... nah. All the vital parts are there, but in the wrong vessel.
Which kills me to say, as I've been a disgustingly huge Rickers fan for years. I even saw Quigly Down Under in the cinema, which was two hours of my life that Rickers owes me. heh
