Description
It's with great pride that I present what I think is my finest work yet, and my new favourite of my many DOA fanarts. If you've seen Hitomi's DOA4 ending movie, then you'll recognise this scene, as I've attempted to base this pic on it, right down to the room, lighting and clothing. If you haven't, but want to, I'm sorry if I've spoiled anything for you - trust me though, there's much more to it than just thisI've never been completely happy with the way I've drawn Hitomi's face in the past. Even though I gradually improved over the years and months, it never seemed quite close enough to her in-game model, but this is by far the closest I've come, and I'm REALLY happy with it. It's partly the eyes, because aswell as getting them the right shape and size, I've also tried adding extra lines above them to represent the open eyelids and some subtle "eye skin" (I'm sure that's not the right term, but that's what I'll call it - basically the weird red stuff in the inner corners of eyes, and on the edges), which I normally neglect, plus I've taken more care with her eyebrows. After my previous success with Tina's mouth, I was quite confident about this one, having learned some secrets about how the lips should look, and this one was done all by myself, largely without reference pics, and I think it's even better. I can still see myself looking back on this in a few months time and shuddering at it, like I always do, but for now, this is my best face!
The hair is nice, about as perfect as I would want it, and is it just me or have they lengthenned Hitomi's hair for DOA4 by about an inch or two? Seems that way in the ending at least, and I've tried to convey that here. While that wonderfully loose shirt was quite difficult to both draw and colour, it mostly looks ok, although perhaps a bit too loose. Fortunately, I took many screenshots from a high quality movie file I have of the ending sequence and was just about able to see the "I'm hungry Peko Peko!" design with enough clarifty, otherwise I would have probably had to make something up there. I recreated this in a seperate .psd and pasted it in. The text isn't exactly the right font, but it'll do, and if you're wondering what the hell "Peko Peko" means, I understand it's Japanese for "Chomp Chomp" which makes it a little bit more coherent. The plates of food came out surprisingly well. I noticed in the real thing, the salad plate actually magically changes to a completely different design later on, so I stuck with the first one for both plates.
And then there's that background. This was also modelled closely on her actual kitchen, and I dunno how obvious it is, but those things hanging from the top are various large cooking instruments she has hanging from hooks. One of my best, and certainly most detailed backgrounds, but my main problem is a slight concern about perspective, and I wonder if we should be able to see a little bit of floor at the bottom of the pic, if the counter is far enough away that it looks that out of focus. As we'd only be missing a bit of her leg, I wonder if it would be a good idea to crop the bottom off, perhaps. The lighting wasn't as difficult to capture as others I've attempted, and I'm quite pleased with the way it shines brightly out of that window.
And that's about it, I think. I hope you enjoy it, and that it was worth waiting for. Please tell me what you make of it! I'm dying to know. ^^

WOW!!! This is so awesome! The level of details(just look at the hair!) and the expert cging(such soft skin) incorporated within this artwork are so absolutely superb; in my opinion, this is truly your best work yet! The lighting(reflected as hightlights on her body) is right on the money and the vivid colors make the scene come alive. And your Hitomi is so perfect! Truly inspiring! *FAV* ^^

It looks really awesome DDD Except.. yanno... *would prefer her more clothes, personally* But that's only to be expected from me.
Hmm.. Though I am thinking.. the colouring is AWESOME but the lineart kinda lets in down in places. Like on her leg or something.. it's look nicer with perhaps a fleshy colour.. or something, yanno...?
Butahh.. whatever! GOOD JOB, ORRIE-DARLING! COOKIE FOR YOOOOOOOOU~ *pass*

Fantastic work!!! This is defiantly my favourite picture you have ever done! It's so cute and sexy (I love Hitomi so much ). It really captures the essence of the end movie and shows Hitomi's funny and cute side. It's great that you have been able to keep that happy and carefree feeling. Itβs wonderful to see such a nice side to a character like this. Well done my friend, this defiantly deserves a
!
The detail in the picture is great. The background is very good: nice and detailed and the lighting effects make everything bright and cheerful. The worktop is very nice and itβs good to see that you have tried to keep it true to the movie. The pots and pans are a nice touch. The only thing I can see wrong with it is the whisks and ladles and stuff at the top. They seem a bit simple and wobbly but I don't really matter as the main focus of the pic is on Hitomi herself.
And Hitomi looks great! It always amazes me that you can put so much detail into a figure. I still have a lot to learn. Her hair is superb! The colour is spot on and the lighting on it and the band is very effective. I really envy your ability with hair.
And yeah, I thought her hair was longer in DOA4 as well. That's fine with me though as I love girls with long hair!
I agree with you that this is the most realistic face you have done so far. It is very like it is in the game. Those eye are so captivating, they really work well. And those new features you put on to them really helped make them look great! They really make a big difference. The mouth is very good too. I always have problems with mouths. All of that time on the Tina picture really paid off. All of the different tones on the skin makes it look so realistic and gives her limps a lot of shape too. I guess that was all done in Photoshop. It looks pretty complicated to put that detail on it. The shirt is great as well! Very sexy! The way you have made it flow and ripple is sooo nice and the creasing and folding of it on the shoulders is brilliant! It's also shaded very well and that gives it a lot of shape. If you put all of these things together then you get a great picture that is full of life and energy. I love it!!!
I really can't stop raving about it! It's just wonderful!

Wow, thanks alot Alcamin! It really pleases me that you enjoyed it so much. My secret to hair is that it's mostly in the lineart. You just have to draw lots and lots, and lots of lines, although this is probably more effective on a graphics tablet, which I use, than pencil and paper. I find it also takes some experience to know how those lines should flow and to prevent them from clashing uncomfortably. After that though, you just have to throw some rough colours on using a soft brush in a layer underneath, and of all the main colour aspects of the pic, that probably takes the least amount of time to do, but makes a considerable difference. Skin and clothing detail is well worth spending time on, in my opinion. I'd rather produce a detailed pic every month than two or three less-detailed, flatter pics.
I'm still very much looking forward to seeing some of your drawings. You think you'll be able to post some soon?

No problem my friend. Thanks for letting me know about all of that stuff, it sounds a bit beyond me at the moment though. Itβs nice to know a bit about how you come up with all of this stuff. I had a go with a tablet for the first time last night and it seem pretty good, although I couldn't get the pressure sensor working. I'll have to fiddle with it a bit more.
I've got a picture going at the moment, but it's still pretty rough. If I'm feeling well enough I'll try and finish it in the next few days. Thanks for your support!

Great work! This has a good, complete feel to it - I haven't seen the original CG but looks like you captured the scene the way you wanted too. I also like the very playful mood and all the colors make this picture very warm to look at. The lighting from the window works very well - there's no mistaking it's breakfast time. Hitomi herself looks great, especially her hair and those gorgeous blue eyes! The shading and contours of her shirt make it look very soft and comfortable...obviously it's not too loose. I love the bowl on the counter top...turned out very well! Glass can be tricky but it's neat when you get it right.
I think the only thing that looks a bit off is the background utensil on the far left. It looks like it's supposed to be a whisk...but it looks a bit strange. Maybe because of the shadow behind it? Meh...not that big a deal though. As for the background/perspective...I don't know if you need to show the floor, but I don't think it matters too much either way. It's all the way at the bottom of the pic and definitely isn't near the focus of the picture. If you want the countertop to be a bit more out of focus (relative to where she is standing) than it should be...then do it - if it gives your art a more interesting appearance, definitely do it. This is a very solid, complete picture - well done.
p.s. I believe you're correct about her hair length...looks to be a bit longer than it was in DOAX (I have a reference book handy). Hmm...I guess the girls don't ever age but their hair still grows.

Thanks for your in-depth comments! Yeah, I'm not overly happy with any of the hanging utensils actually, maybe cos I wasn't quite sure how they should look. Then again, they're only really there to help create the scene, and I guess no one's focusing on them, huh? Glad you enjoyed it.
