Description
Well, it's been a long time coming, but worth it, I think. I sketched and submitted this a month ago ([link] ), and I've only just finished today, mainly because of college work getting in the way, plus this just took a really, really long time to CG. Photoshop 7 and tablet, and this is Hitomi from the Dead or Alive series of games. You'll find an uncovered version here: [link]Well, I really like it. Could be my best CG so far, I'm not sure yet. As I said in the Lineart, I wanted a very prone, and vulnerable image of her, something we rarely see from Hitomi, at all. Sure, there are little niggles here and there but I love the general feeling. You just wanna cuddle her X3. But MAN, what a challenge. This has probably been my hardest pic yet, mainly because of the lighting. It was a constant struggle to get the balance between light and dark just right, and their exact colours and shades, and particularly getting the dark areas to look how I want them to. Even now, they're still being stubborn. At a certain point, something happened in photoshop, and my dark shadings weren't as smooth as they had been until then. I tried everything to smooth them out or figure out why it happened, but nothing seemed to work. I've added a bit of bluring at the last minute, but her skin still looks a bit rough in places, which really annoys me, actually. So sorry about that, but nothing seems to work on it. Any suggestions as to what may have happened there are welcome.
Because of the dark nature of this image, I figured I'd best lay down the basic background colours before starting on anything else. Just like my GCSE art teacher always suggested, but it's something I rarely do, I must admit. But that way, I get a better idea of what her skin tones should be, right away. As opposed to altering them later, to suit the background as I usually do. It never ceases to surprise me how different one colour looks when it's placed around certain others. If you removed the black background and bed, that skin colour looks ubsurdly dark against a white background, but infront of the dark, it just works.
I'm not entirely sure how easy it is to sit in that exact pose, but I'm mostly happy with it. It doesn't look that awkward, at least, and all my main concerns from the first sketch have all been straightenned out. I'm really pleased with how I've done the sheets, and I like the shininess and looseness of her hair. I was really happy with the flow of it in the original drawing, and I wanted to preserve that as best I can. Those highly popular feet of hers look pretty cute, if a little pale-ish, and those eyes and general expression are very nice too. As I said, my only real beef with this pic are the shading problems. The light areas down her back look really smooth, but the dark areas ruin that feeling a bit, and it really annoys me cos everything I tried to rectify it had little to no effect. Grrr >
Soooo, let me know what you think of her! I'd say I achieved what I set out to get. The thing I really like about it is how unusual it is to see Hitomi so vulnerable. This is a state usually reserved for only Kasumi and perhaps Ayane, and certainly their Mother in DOAU, and I think she looks really sweet like that. So give me your thoughts, however detailed. Thanks alot! ^^

The back side of any creature is most sensitive even by the best protection, which is why any one agrees to watch their backside while alone or vulnerable. Protecting the front is natural since that is the natural orientation of the human body as well as any species, the flanks as well becasue all is needed isa quick side glance to check. It is teh rear that has to be watched because the lack of protection and most oft displayed part of any person or creature.
Of course, the backside can be a very secretive and private palce, to leta significant otehr to approach from, which takes great trust, becasue approaching from the back has already been labeled as a style of attack which would be backstabbing.
She must be very trusting to whom she is exposing her backside to, or she has been surprised by someone and she did not anticipate it, the eyes lend that sort of shock or bewilderment to her.
I do say though, even if I only a writter, I respect illustrators very much. faved of course!
A very excelent piece!

'Tis a very well drawn, vulnerable 'Tomi! Though, I agree with 'firecracker'. Though I didn't notice it her next does seem a little long... but meh, not important.
LOVING the sheets... very nicely done!!!
All-in-all.. fantastic picture my dear! Keep it up!

I think the skin tones look pretty good. They aren't too rough, but I wonder what kind of brush you're using if you would like it smoother. This kind of lighting condition is difficult, because it seems like you have very diffused lighting in an enclosed room. It might be a little easier if you added a definite, strong light source, like moonlight streaming in from an open (and off the page) window. Actually, I once did a Hitomi pic like this, but it's pretty bad, so it'll remain under the bed forever
Regarding the pose, I think you did a pretty good job. There are some areas in the anatomy that confuse me to how exactly she is sitting though. Generally, with her arm that straight, that would suggest she's leaning a lot of her weight on it, which would drive her right shoulder up, almost to her cheek. That would also exaggerate the line of her spine. I like the way you rendered her waist, but at the way it's tilted, the legs would also have to angle downwards more. Or, if you like the way her legs are, you would have to tilt her waist more to the right. Her neck is a tad long, I think. Ah, I dunno if that made any sense at all. I can draw out what I mean if you'd like.
If I may make a comment on the eyes and face, they both should receive more shadows, since her hair and the back of her head would be obscuring most light. The pupils themselves should also receive shadows, the way you have the whites shaded.
For the uncovered version, I think you not drawing the nipple was a good choice.
Have you tried sharpening it a little when you resized it? That usually helps me a lot.
I agree, this is your strongest piece. I hope you found what I suggested useful. Keep up the good work

well, you did a awesome job on the coloring, but her neck looks really long, when you turn around behind you, your chin shouldnt even be above the shoulder, it should be behind the shoulder or almost touching it, but otherwise you did a really good job
