my other Sols are soooo lame compared to this one
but Sol is such a weird character physically, it makes sense i would have to make more than one attempt. on warriors wiki they describe him as a a mixed tabby tortie, which is weird cuz male cats are normally not tortie, but whatever... i really like how this one turned out^^warriors: erin hunter

it's the one thing about warriors that makes so sense, it's not that male cats are not normally tortoise shell, they physically can not be.
The patterns in female cat's fur can come out this way because it has to deal with the X chromosome. XX is female, XY is male, the reason the fur will be many different colors is because one of the X chromosomes in a female cat will turn off. Scientists have found that this is random and the reason why some turn off and some turn on is not explained. The reason the genes do turn off though is because the body only needs one X chromosome to create the right enzymes in your body to function normally. Well, if a male's X chromosome turns off, he only has a Y chromosome left, he would have deficiencies in all sorts of areas and could not possibly live. Male cats that have this issue usually die before they are born, don't fully develop in the womb, or are born normally and die because they can't created enzymes and proteins. Sorry for the rant, but male cats cannot be tortoiseshell or calico cats =/
It's a nice drawing though of an improbable character. I feel like a jerk now because my little speech had nothing to do with your nice image. Your drawing is really beautiful, I love the patterns int he fur and the white whiskers have feel against the darker face. I wish the authors of Warriors would research a little bit more when they make up characters, this concept isn't hard to understand, and even if it seems difficult, it's well known that these cats are not male haha. Oh well I shouldn't get so upset =/

I used to foster a tortoiseshell male kitten. His name was Puffin.
He was a very healthy kitten and didnt have any issues. I would have kept him but I gave him to my grandmother after her 20 year old cat passed away

Actually, that's one of the few things that bothers me about WarriorsXD they mention a bunch of tortoishell male cats?! i knew this when they first mentioned redtail and Sol, and was like, "ok, that can't happen." But i chose to stick with the canon description even if it's biologically impossible

I would like to point out that while tortie males are very, very rare, they can happen. They're rarely healthy, always sterile, and go for thousands and thousands of dollars. It doesn't make sense. I guess the fact that Sol's a tortie just adds to his odd character.

Lol I actually found the male torti I used to foster. He was left in a box at the Walmart parking lot.
He only got sick once when he ate part of a houseplant that made him throw up.

Me neither. There's one thing I don't understand, though. Redtail had a kit, Sandstorm. I don't think the Erin Hunters actually know cats very well.

I've seen a few artists who change him into a tabby or just a solid color. But like you said that's not tortoiseshell and you wanted to keep him canon, which is good too, cause then everyone knows or has an idea of who you are drawing.
