Simple, beautiful... That's it! I like it and thus I'll I like the light, contrasts, facial expression... The details in the hair... ...and of course... ...the look in her eyes
congrats, it's a winner. Cheers--Flow.

You have no idea how great a relief it was to run across this photo while wasting time at work. A portrait that didn't make me wish you had to qualify for a camera-liscence! Really, it's great.
I might have edged the composition a smidgen over toward the right side of the frame, but you're very close anyway and you don't want to cut off.
I noticed that you say you like the sharp dark/light contrasts and they do add to the image but I think either harsh (flash) lighting or digital tinkering has lead to washed out and really glare-like whites across the nose, throat and right cheek. It looks shiney and the rest of your photo doesn't compliment shiney. A diffuser (or napkin) over your lightsource would fix that, as would reduced tampering with the contrast. Too much contrast tampering can cause that washed, shiney look.

Interesting critique. I actually shot it using completely natural light. As for the contrast.. well, I guess it's down to personal taste. I can't see the 'shiny' effect which you're referring to - it might be down to a difference in monitors. I happen to like harshness.. I find it alarming.

It probably is a monitor thing. I was using a flatscreen at work and got the shiney. Here at home its much better. Weird, that.

Your right eye (at the left in the picture) seems like it has a tear coming down from it, due to the hair that's covering it. Is it on purpose?

Total coincidence. Interesting though..
Do you think it's a sad portrait?

Yes, it's definitely sad, and maybe a bit surprised (though this might also be because of your XXL-sized eyes). It's almost as if you're at the brink of tears but you're trying to smile anyway; for example, if you were hoping to get a new job, you thought it was a sure thing, you were very illusioned and had made a lot of plans, and then they tell you that another one (possibly someone you know isn't as skilled as you, or some relative of the boss, some other unfairness) got it. Or as if you've just come home after a good day, with a smile in your face, and then you saw something that froze your smile, like your boyfriend cheating you, your cat dead, or something equally bad.
Did I guess right? Do I win something?

Oh I love your interpretation.. I really, really love it. Thank you. I can totally see where you're coming from. And yes, it could very easily be that. I didn't take it with that intention.. but it doesn't matter. I love the fact that my photos are ambiguous and that people read into them.. whatever they want to see. It's a really beautiful thought, and it means a lot to me.
To me, the photo is a mixture of looking into my future with a mixture of inspired determination and fear.

Glad that you liked it. Art is supposed to be some sort of connection between artist and spectator; if there's no connection, no bond like that, then it's just something pretty, but not really art. It's the same reason why we're not listening to classical music exclusively
But anyway, don't say things like those very often. I might start commenting every deviation of yours just to see if the bell rings again

What do you think a shorter shutter speed would add to the image? I actually increased the gamma on the face.. just because I like the stark contrasts between dark and light.
