Description 12x16" 30x40cm acrylic on hardboard

The painting of the week - final version. I'll not claim that this is any great shake at a painting, I did, after all, just paint over the first version, keeping the scene almost the same. But at least it's in a style that can't be mistaken for an attempt at realism (I hope). One sign of that is that you probably need the title to know what's going on here. I always find that useful. This his, however, a much better painting than the first attempt – in my opinion. Yours may differ. Indeed, I'd bet that the 1st version draws more views, realism always does. Still, that's all to the good, I think. If you want a lottery ticket for someday being considered a great artist, I don't think you can paint anything too popular. The popular artists' popularity tends to fade with the passing of their generation. You're more likely to be famous longer if you're discovered and then hailed as a visionary after you're dead. That's my theory, anyways, and I'm sticking with it. The fact that maybe 1 out of a 100 people who are interested in art like my work is just where I want to be. I've got my ticket. I've told the kids to read the Upton Sinclair's Lanny Budd series and play the game. (Lanny Budd deftly turns his dead step father's art into a fortune)

I used to devour those Lanny Budd books in my teens. Loved them.

I like this picture very much. Works best if I squint and look at it obliquely - then I start seeing all sorts of things I imagine but which you probably never put there.

Wasn't keen on the gate in the last one.

I'm sure the library has gotten rid of them by now & they're out of print as well.
Didn't like the gate myself, but I see in a comment below, Grzegorz-Kawka liked it, which is why I think you should keep it simple and just please yourself.

Yes, I agree (despite the fact that I'm currently doing the most extraordinarily complicated painting I've ever attempted).

My mum has all the Lanny Budd books, so theoretically I could re-read them any time. Might do that. Been decades since I looked at one.

On this one the wall is more like in my imagination. Good choice of colors. But I loved the sky from the first one, backgrund woods and the gate (!).
In final, of course this version is better with one, most important thing - dept. It shows it deeper. Lights are more intensive on the foreground. You did with this a great job.
But I really miss the gate. So I will choose the first one. Even if it contains "realism" or small mistakes, or simply something that it's not a quite your personal favourite style.

Liked the background myself, but the gate really bugged me. And I wasn't crazy about the foreground trees as well. A close call, since I got as far as photographing it. But in the end, I like this version better, though I think it could've been even better if I was using a different brush. Was using a stiff round brush, and I much prefer stiff flat brushes – you can get a little more detail in with a brush with an edge on it.

Well my edges are strict mostly to the pastel sticks or a screwdriver, so... 😁

I reckon that if there were two paintings...the former....and the latter ...and I was a millionaire....I  would buy both (as I do like both) and see what happened....!!!Looking at your versatility in the meanwhile!!....
I haven't read the Upton Sinclair Lanny Budd Series......

You get both, with this one. One's just under the other. Some paintings look better the next day, and others look worse. The original was one of the latter. One of the Lanny Budd books won the Pulitzer prize back in the 1940's. They're out of print now, and I read them long ago. He was a spy of sorts, but was an art expert as a cover, and carefully cultivated the genius of his mother's second husband who left a lot of paintings behind when he died in WW1, and that's about all I remember of them. I tell the kids they've got a millions of dollars waiting for them, if they play their cards right...

Thanks for the comments. Opinion seems pretty evenly divided on this one.
