Toadkit was born the youngest in a litter of three other kits: Turtlekit, Geckokit, and Newtkit. Her parents, Prairienose and Blackwhisp, are older warriors and Toadkit's litter was their third litter. In total, Toadkit has eight siblings.

Due to her family's large size, Toadkit constantly felt the need to prove herself in order to be recognized. She wanted to find a way to make her parents proud, and even from her earliest days in the nursery it was clear she would be a terrible fighter. She was too small and too delicate to do any damage.

With all of the rowdiness her three siblings started, Toadkit started to develop a hatred for violence and fighting. She tried to break up the fights between her constantly bickering siblings, but usually couldn't get very far. She would be very vocal with her beliefs, and try to impose her views on the other kits.

She didn't want to become a warrior, because she didn't want to have to hurt anyone. She began to follow the medicine cat around a lot, learning little tidbits of information and herbal lore.

She dreaded the day of her apprentice ceremony, worried that she would have to train as a warrior. But when the leader proclaimed her as Paintedclan's next medicine cat apprentice she was overjoyed.
