I want to poke him, he looks so squishy. Though I imagine he would not like it. Also, the coloring indicates he may be poisonous.

They're pretty twitchy when you touch them, they move surprisingly fast. A lot of salamanders have some amount of toxin in their skins, but usually not enough to bother humans, unless you rub it in your eyes.

gorgeous longicada!
The photo is great, I really love the contrasting color on the leaves.
I spent two months working in the Cookson Hills WMA (southeast OK) doing a herpetological survey with the Sam Noble museum...We found loads of these guys, they're a blast to look for and find. I wish I'd had my DSLR at the time!

Glad you like the pic! This guy was found on Nature Conservancy land up in the Ozarks. This trip was the first time I had seen salamanders in any sort of numbers.
Ever make it down to Little River NWR? Pretty awesome place. I hope to make it back to Oklahoma someday to herp.

I've never been there actually. I've done casual herping in a lot of areas as a boy scout (got Eagle in 2005). I really only stayed in scouts for a long time because I got to travel around Oklahoma, plus a little in KS and AR, and I really added a lot to my species lists on those trips! But the Ozarks are absolutely gorgeous. A student who just graduated did his doctoral dissertation on plethodon salamanders from that area, and so we've got a lot of specimens from the area at our museum. Absolutely gorgeous scenery and so many salamanders!
