Description After Effects Animation...
This counts as a so called "limited" animation, as there is "only" one base image used, this time I needed like 30 parts or so, each leg, each hair part, etc. etc. animated using the puppet tool and wave mesh in AfterEffects. Even though I've been working over a year with it now, there is so much to learn...

Base image of this is here: [link]

Fullview shows the whole thing in a rather good quality as a flash-animation, it's a frame-by-frame thing though, just saved it as a flash file so I can put it up here.

immense! not sure how I missed this!! - it's great! - I had no idea you could do stuff like this in after effects - when can we see more?

Thanks a lot!
It's limited animation on a different "level" though needed to do that at work too a few times already, AfterEffects offers a lot more, but that puppet tool is the most awesome thing, specially if you want to create animations like this here
I have two other similar scenes I am working on, but due to the lameness of my comp it will take me quite a while until I finish some more

yeah i can imagine it'd be a real drag trying to work on something that processor intensive on a machine that wasn't up to spec... - just loading and saving photoshop files is sometimes a mission for my machine! lol

Lizkay In reply to KatCardy [2009-07-02 20:54:57 +0000 UTC]

it's evil...
it's a bit like bones in a 3D model, and every time you bend it via another new key set you need to wait around 2 minutes until you see a result XD so it's kinda hard to do an animation that looks like what you imagine as you need to work 'blind' all the time
and my comp is already new, dual core over 2GB RAM and whatnot shi.. and still... lame XD

yeesh! lol.. I imagine that must be a real pain in the ass... conversations like this help me to realise that I dont' miss animation that much after all lol
Mind you, flash/drawing was never THAT complicated!! .. I never got a chance to play with computer animation other than flash. \:]

Amazing. I really wish I could learn how to animate like this. I only know how to animate frame by frame, but it often still looks pretty choppy. And I can imagine that, in doing a picture like this, that would take loads of work. I do own Flash and After Effects, but I wouldn't have a clue as to how those programs work.

Besides the awesome animation and the lovely use of colours, I must say that the whole thing is very well drawn too. There are some minor details that could use fixing (some parts of the horses head and the elbow on the horse's left leg look a bit awkward), but aside from those things this is really a splendid piece of art. My last bit of critique is the position of the rider's arm. Well, not necessarily it's position, but rather the fact that it doesn't change it's position. It looks rather stiff.

Well~ I got a bit carried away... What I really wanted to say was something along the lines of:
WOW! AWESOME!!!

Thanks a lot!

It's created using this so called "puppet tool" in AfterEffects, you need to make a base image in a "stiff" pose, like a reference image for a 3D modelling for example, where are all limbs fully visible, then you cut it into pieces and add "joints" then you need to set keys for all joints for each frame, and then you get a full-movement in the end

TNHawke In reply to ??? [2009-06-07 07:49:39 +0000 UTC]

Wow... it's incredible.

I love that the feet and ground move at the same rate. So often I see animations where the ground moves faster than the character. You might try having the hills in the background move 'slower' to give a more realistic view of the passing scenery.

I am noticing... I think there's a bit too much 'activity' in the mane and tail, they move too much.

The body moves well, but I can see where just the legs are animated. There's a shoulder in the horse's chest that isn't moving with the leg. (I've done that before on accident)

Something about the way the head and neck are moving with the body... It looks more like he's tripping than running smoothly. I THINK (not positive) that the head is up while the front legs are extended, and it should be down and stretched out at that point, and then up when his legs are gathered under him.

The rider looks amazing!

The actual leg movement looks spot on to me.

Excellent work, keep it up!

Lizkay In reply to TNHawke [2009-06-08 18:44:31 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot!

Concerning that background the sky and the dunes are two parts, badly I only had those hills as one long image so they're moving really fast to fit to the horse (was kinda hard to get that fitting to the speed of the horse legs and still loop XD) so I was just happy it ended up decent at all, guess I know what to look out for when I do another moving background

The legs are all seperated, there actually two visible joint-part to the body that don't really move as they should, I tried to get rid of that problem but there is no way I can avoid that with the technique I am using, guess trying to add the viewer's-front legs to the body would help... hmm.. the head movement including all hair-parts is out of balance concering the rest, and I really hate that tail XD, I had to animate that one seperate and just added it to the finished body moving later.. so it doesn't fit at all

^__^

Very nice. I can give a little more critique if you want, but I know you`vfe probbly worked very hard with this and don`t want someone telling you what`s wrong now tat it`s done. I`ll just say the neck seems a little stiff. But the shading is very nice and the movement is soft and flows well.

Lizkay In reply to FireFur [2009-06-05 16:56:05 +0000 UTC]

Thankie!
I also think the movement of the head isn't really that good at all.. too much up and down which needs to go more forward, slower and smooth, not sure if I will re-touch this as the file seems to not load right, but I will keep that in mind as I plan to do more animations of that type

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FireFur In reply to Lizkay [2009-06-06 04:25:15 +0000 UTC]

Ah. ^.^ Also maybe look at the feet. They move nicely, but seem kinda rounded where they should probbly be sharper. It`s hard to describe... maybe check uot the Spirit Stallion running animations?

That pegasus was "only" a mesh animation this is some real puppet action, which is also a lot more work but still, loved to work on that! Hope I can make more of that type.

Yeah, I think the head needs a shorter way up and down and moving more forward, I also need to get rid of that little "hop" inside the animation flow there

Hm... the lighting and crisp lines are pretty nice... The animation itself is a little stiff looking.

However, I am not sure how it is possible that the guy has not yet fallen off the horse. His horsemanship is.. lacking to say the least.

My suggestion would be to look up videos of people riding horses. You'll see what I mean about his posture then.
