Description
This aircraft is based on the original Orca design from Command and Conquer and the FPS title C&C: Renegade.I started to build that very gunship. But as I worked through it, I felt that the design itself needed a lot of changes that I kept reworking elements of the aircraft.
The original design's engines are mounted so far back that it looked (and practically was) forward heavy. That led me to lengthen the tail and make the rear section larger. Then I had to move the engines forward on my own version. Plus the original had tiny little struts to hold the power plants onto the side of the body. Naturally, I redesigned that with something more feasible.
The wings in one of the illustrations were way too small to support the weapon pods. Not to mention that it lacked the mount support structure. So I enlarged the wings. For a fast attack craft, I also swept the wings back.
Lastly, none of the original Orca designs (from the first C&C game and C&C Renegade) had any landing gear. Even the toy suggested it was a belly lander. So I had to figure out a fuselage shape to incorporate landing gear.
The rest of the design I adapted from real-world aircraft. The Apache Longbow and the Comanche stealth helicopter among others.
Oddly enough, I started by building the M230 chain gun you see mounted in the front.

Command & Conquer was one o my favorite RTS games back in the day. Played all of them save for the last in the Tiberum series. And yes, I even liked Renegade.

When I did a search for reference images before building this Orca model, there was one! There was an entire toy line released when C&C: Renegade was new.

I loved Renegade. Finally, we knew what was inside of all those buildings. And then the multiplayer mode stripped it right back out again! I wish people still played that: I'm hoping some people made bot mods, or that someone made an awesome megamap that could pass for a Westwood campaign level. Those bases were awesome!

Yeah, too bad Renegade 2 was canceled before it was finished. It looked pretty good from the previews. Modders tried to improve Renegade but I hadn't seen a production move to completion. A lot of fan efforts but no finishers. I didn't get into multiplayer since I preferred the story mode.

I'd rock 20 of them and just devastate EVERYTHING! Really, that and a Commando are all that you need sometimes.

I liked the commando mission in the original C&C. With the help of a Chinook helicopter, he was unstoppable. Of course, it was annoying when he blew up a building and there'd be some leftover soldiers from the rubble. If anything, there shouldn't be men left behind after a structure is destroyed. I'm glad they fixed that in Red Alert 1 with Tanya. She did a number on soldiers and buildings. In the last Allied mission of Red Alert 1, I'd put her in an APC with two medics so the enemy wouldn't get her.

In RA, after Tanya I liked playing the Bond-esque Spy. His only weakness seemed to be the German shepherds. If you could get Tanya, the Spy and two medics together, you had a nearly unstoppable force!
As for the original C&C, I learned to quickly click away from a building after setting the bomb. It kept Col. Havok away from the building explosion and the survivors would be taken out. "That was left-handed!"

I've thought about doing a number of C&C based vehicles. It just turns out this ended up being a one-shot production. Who knows? I might revisit the universe sometime in the future!

Thanks! I had plans to do other C&C vehicles, but never really got around to it. Most of them look good and plausible as they are, but the original Orca, while neat, needed a LOT of work to look right.

Quality work here - like how you looked at the original and redressed the flaws - the net result is a fantastic gunship design - looks the business - excellent!

There are a still a few areas I'd change from this point. But from here on, I'm pretty satisfied with the end result.

Oh wow. This is stunning. It would probably be better on a light background though; a lot of the details you apparently put a lot of work into are completely invisible because of the low contrast with the background.

I chose a black background because white on a projected image (ie. your monitor) can be glaring for the viewer.

Ah, yeah. Air superiority is one of the tactics I liked using in all of the games. Even if they have strong air defense, all you need to do is take out a few power plants!
Glad you liked the model! I'm thinking of how to render out some detail shots. These two views don't even show half the work I put into it.
