is that spray paint? urethane powder coat would have been more trendy i think. still pretty sweet though.

I should specify, it's fire scale that has been heat treated in oil that basically burns black on it. The color is amplified by the background, I have other shots of it where it doesn't look so black. But this is more fitting, plus it is a tutorial for anyone that wants to make one with the least amount of tools possible.
The Arkham Asylum batarang will be powder coated, since I won't be making a written tutorial over it. There will be a video of it being made, but it will just be a work in progress video, unlike this one.
