There's something about file knives that I love. What else is a knife maker going to do with an old file? The tool that's worked on so man projects becomes the new project, it's just a little transcendent in a way.

Agreed. There's a lot of complications that can mess things up.

Diggin' those! Very similar to the Ringed Razel I got from CRKT (a Graham Razel design), VERY handy and stout as all hell!
My only opinion would be to have made the exposed tang at the back a little shorter, as it could get uncomfortable if your grip slipped back a bit, otherwise, killer blades!

Oh nice! I will definitely keep that in mind when making more. I'll try to get it closer to the hole and see how it works out. Thank you for that.

Either that, or maybe even move the hole closer "up" (towards the spine) and make the exposed tang more assymmetrical or oblong, have it stick out more on the spine side and taper down towards the edge side, something like... a vane for an arrow, for the only analogy coming too me when I'm this tired, lol. Would end up being a curved exposed tang instead of angular.

Nice work.
In the old west they used to leave file marks on knives they made out of files to show they where made from quality steel. This is based off of that?

I guess. My grandfather made bowies out of them, but that was all. So I wanted to make a full tang knife out of it, to give a little more variety to the rasps that I usually make.

Now THESE should have been a prize in and of themselves! Tres cool, Logan.
They look so... ..brutal and fierce and just all-in-all kickass! How big are they?
What wood did you use for the handles? And where do you come up with your ideas?

Logan-Pearce In reply to Averant [2011-10-26 07:13:50 +0000 UTC]
Thank you, thank you! The one on top is 11 1/2" long and the bottom one is 10 3/4" long. The handle is Osage Orange. I just draw them up. For a long time I had been wanting to do a fixed blade horseshoe rasp knife, since the only ones I had made before were hidden tang. When I designed this one, I was itching to make a cleaver or two. So! I decided to make a horseshoe rasp cleaver and test out the osage orange that had been given to a friend. After showing it around, everyone started wanting cleavers and it was the first knife I sold at the knife show I went to. So I started making a few more since people liked them so much. I freaking love them though. The top one is already gone. I'll probably hang on to the bottom one since I don't have one myself and it's shorter than all of the others. They are sweet though.

Yeah, I can make them have just about any handle you want. I think I have some bloodwood, but I can order just about any wood you would like.
