Description

Back on this thing! My ongoing expansion of the Dredd film universe with a look at the wider world of this version of the lawman. Today we're heading to the wilds of PanAfrica!

Due to covering the entirety of the continent, Judges of PanAfrica are a varied bunch. In the Great African Dustbowl, and some of the major cities, Johannesburg, Simba City and alike have standard judge uniforms and equipment. Some minor aesthetic differences aside. Helmet design having a slightly altered visor and blue ribbon, the main body of the uniform being more like lightweight army fatigues than heavy leather jackets and trousers to deal with the heat, the shoulder pads also are different, one side displaying the flag of the nation of their jurisdiction.

The only judges in PanAfrica which have a completely different uniform are the Judges of Luxor. Luxor is the richest megacity in PanAfrica and one of the richest overall in the surviving world of Dredd. It is a gigantic gated community essentially and as such has it's own security, the Luxor Judges. Whilst being closely tied to PanAfrica's Justice Dept. They are not a part of it the same way judges in other parts of PanAfrica are. They are more like a private army or highly-trained security guards. Also highly paid...

Their uniform's got more of the security guard look about them when compared to a regular street judge's police. The lighter colour is meant to make them seem non-threatening and, of course, the Egyptian theming helps them to look truly like part of the city. While the Luxor Judges can come across as friendly and trustworthy, they are also some of the most brutal and harsh amongst the entire Judge System. Also, some of the more easily corruptible, which comes as no big surprise, considering the city of Luxor.

And finally there are 'Bush Judges'. Much like the Judge Marshals in the Cursed Earth of North America and Outback, PanAfrica's vast swathes of desert and remaining jungles still have people living out there and the Justice Dept has people out there to keep an eye on them. The uniform regs for Bush Judges (and street judges as well) are more relaxed. Since survival is key in the wildlands, if it helps the judges perform their tasks better, the Justice Dept. are fine with the lack of proper attire. In the case of street judges; Ancient tribal fashions, tattoos, warrior necklaces and charms, and even bones from animals may be added to the uniform for morale purposes without suffering disciplinary action.

I had fun designing these. It was cool to look at modern African cultures and try and figure out how I could incorporate them into the Dredd universe. And looking at some of the old 2000AD comics to see if I could take some elements from there as well. Only, you know, without making things too stereotypical... Hopefully I succeeded.
