You peer around the corner carefully, breathing in and out slowly. Your heart is pounding, but somehow you stay in control. You lift your knife, listening for it. You hold your hand steady and step out from the corner. A loud moan sounds and the creature steps toward you, grabbing out with grimy hands. You push the hands aside and thrust your knife into the skull, nearly hilt deep. The now dead walker slumps to the ground, body hitting concrete. You glance behind you and gesture to Glenn. He nods, walking over.
"Any more?" he whispers, looking around. You shake your head.
"There's always more, but no," you laugh humorlessly, "think we got them all here."
Glenn doesn't laugh but you see a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Yeah, okay. Let's go."
He gives your hand a quick squeeze before he moves past you, heading toward the large crates lined along the wall. You toss a look over your shoulder once more, before following close behind. The air in the warehouse is stale, reeking of old cardboard and musty foam. The smell of rotting flesh and blood waft underneath it all and you try not to breath too deeply. As you go along, Glenn and you peer in all the boxes, checking everything. You look for anything useful, but mostly food.
You check a box and look over to Glenn, who is currently digging through another a few yards away. You study his profile, admiring the way his lean muscles move beneath his t-shirt. He turns to you excitedly. "I think I found something." He reaches further in the box, nearly shoulder deep. You flash him a smile. You turn back to your own box, trying to concentrate less on Glenn and more on the task at hand. There's time for daydreaming when the job is done. You lift your box, angling for a better view at it's contents. You think you might see something, possibly a cereal box, when a hand snakes out and grabs your ankle. You screech, falling to the floor as it tugs. The box falls on top of you, spilling foam peanuts across your face and hair, blocking your vision. The box is heavier than you thought, pinning your legs to the ground. You feel the walker, tugging hard. Glenn is yelling and underneath all the noise, you can hear the walker's teeth snapping. Your chest heaves in fear and you yank your foot. The walker's grip is tight and it only pulls you harder, sending you sliding across the floor with the box digging painfully into your thighs. You work your arms free and push, tug, pull at the box. Your panic isn't doing much to help you however, and it doesn't budge. You become aware of a high pitched screaming and you realize with horror that's it's coming from you. Glenn is still shouting, running over to you. He makes it to you and lifts the box, tossing it to the side.
Relief sweeps through you but is soon gone. Now that the weight of the box is gone the walker's tugging becomes more effective, and you are pulled across the floor as you scramble to hold onto anything. Your hands meet nothing and you watch as the walker's teeth come within inches of your ankle. All you can do is scream. You close your eyes, not wanting it's dead eyes to be the last thing you see. All of a sudden it's grip goes limp and the grinding sounds stop. You open your eyes and see Glenn kneeling over the walker, thrusting his knife into it's head again and again. You pull your foot loose, scrambling from the body. You lay there, heaving while you watch Glenn mutilate the corpse.
"Glenn! It's dead!" You cry out. Tears are rolling down your cheeks but you make no move to brush them away. Glenn doesn't hear you, or doesn't listen. You clamber from the floor, crawling over to Glenn. "Glenn!" you touch his arm and he jerks, stopping.
He drops the knife, panting. When he looks up at you your heart flips. His eyes are tear filled and he looks horrified.
"Glenn, I'm okay," you say desperately. He meets your eyes. Then he surprises you by wrapping his arms around you tightly, burying his face against your neck. You leave your arms dangling for a minute, before reaching up and hugging him back.
"Glenn, I'm okay," you repeat. He's shaking and you hold him closer.
"God, I can't lose you, I can't lose you...." he repeats over and over, almost like a prayer. You pull back, gripping his shoulders.
"Glenn, I'm here. You won't lose me."
He takes your face in his hands, gazing at you a moment before meeting your lips with his. It's a quick kiss, but it's desperate.
"I can't lose you," he says again, searching your eyes intently.
"You won't."
He nods, moving back and taking your ankle in his hands. "Did he scratch you?"
You shake your head and Glenn sighs in relief. "That was a close call. Let's finish up and get out of here."
He helps you up, tugging you close once more. "When we get back," he whispers, pressing his forehead to yours, "We can finish that kiss."
"Okay," you breath.
