Description
Weeks pass and you've had hardly any connection with Phil Coulson. You've started to think it's personal. You've talked to Jemma many times about why he might hate you and she tries to console you and say Coulson doesn't hate anyone. But you know she has no idea.
So you shrug it off and try to continue working hard so maybe one day he'll actually recognize your efforts.
Once again you're complaining to Jemma when something unexpected happens.
Coulson pops his head in the lab, making both you and Jemma jump in guilt.
"Dr. (l/n), my office." Then just like that, he's gone.
"Did he hear?" you mouth to a horrified Jemma. She shakes her head with wide eyes.
You straighten your lab coat, nervously leaving the lab and making your way to Coulson's office.
The door is open when you reach it and you tentatively step inside, suddenly experiencing deja vu.
"Doctor." Coulson is already seated and you follow suit.
"Sir."
Coulson leans forward, studying you. "I think it's time we had a talk."
You stay silent, wary about where this might be headed.
"As you know, the first day you arrived I said you had to prove yourself to this team."
"Right," you agree.
"Well," Coulson stands up. He holds out his hand. "Welcome to the team."
You gape at him for a moment. "Uh...." then you stand up, nearly knocking over your chair. "Thank you, Sir." You shake his hand.
Coulson smiles at you, perhaps for the first time. It's breathtaking. "You've earned it."
You think for sure you're dreaming. "I have?" you ask hesitantly.
"Of course. You've more than proven your place here. I hope you stay."
"I-I will," you say eagerly. That's when you realize you're still holding Coulson's hand. Coulson seems notice this too, and you both clear your throats, pulling your hands away.
"Um, well. I'll just get back to work, then," you murmur.
"Yes, of course," Phil nods, sitting back down.
You leave his office quickly, not sure if you imagined the tension in the air or if it was real.
