Description
Sam and Dean took care of the monster's body, making sure she never came after you and Cas again. You quickly moved Cas to another hospital, just in case. Once again, bruises covered your face and ribs. Sam too, poor guy. Dean feels guilty because not only is he unscathed, he also hadn't been there to help. All this mess, but you couldn't be happier. Cas is alive and awake.
You sit on the edge of his hospital bed, holding his hand tightly. You won't ever let it go again. Dean and Sam had left to get coffee, leaving you and Cas alone for the first time since the incident. They could see they weren't doing much, as Cas hadn't taken his eyes off of you the entire time they had been in the room. Now, the door closed behind them.
"How are you?" he asks softly. Your eyes widen.
"How am I? Me? No, how are YOU?"
"I'm fine," Cas smiles.
"Cas...." you swallow hard. "I thought....you were going to die. Why didn't you tell me how much she hurt you?"
Cas shakes his head, finally moving his eyes away from you. He studies the blanket. "I wasn't as badly injured as you. Not until..." he pauses. He's so quiet for a minute, you don't think he'll continue. Then, "until after you blacked out." He meets your eyes.
Slowly, realization dawns. "Cas...." your eyes water. "You didn't."
Cas smiles, squeezing your hand. "I told you, I'll always protect you."
You shake your head, tears flowing freely now. "What did she do to you?" you whisper, horrified. "How could you?"
"I had to. I couldn't trust Dean and Sam would come. I was the only one who could do anything." Cas laughs drily. "We both know she liked torturing me better."
Your heart jerks and you let go of Cas's hand to hide your face. You had no right to cry. But you feel terrible.
"(y/n)," Cas says gently, pulling your hands away. You look at him through a blurry vision. He's as beautiful as ever, but purple bruises still spread across his jaw and cheekbones, and he has a deep scar above his eyebrow.
He reaches for your forehead, running his fingertips along your hairline, down to your jaw. "You were going to die. I couldn't let that happen."
You shake your head again, close your eyes. His fingers continue to trace your features, smoothing away your hair and wiping your tears.
"All I had wanted was to see you again. She let me, before...but you were already too far gone."
"Cas," you say firmly, looking up at him. "You can't ever do that again. Sam and Dean....they come. They ALWAYS come."
Cas nods. "I know that now."
You move to snuggle into Cas's side, careful of his injuries. He wraps his arms around you, kissing the top of your head. You are determined to never fall asleep again, unless Cas is right there.
