You start to come to, scrunching your face. Your body is still wracked with pain, but that's not what you notice. Your hand is empty. Cas. You reach your hand out, searching for his hand, but you meet nothing but air. You crack your eyes open, the bright light piercing through. Maybe you're in heaven? If that's the case, you might see Cas again. But no. Your eyes focus on a bright white ceiling with a fluorescent light bulb. Your other senses start to come back and you realize you're lying on a soft bed. You lift your head and pain shoots down your back. You lay it back on the pillow gingerly, very carefully turning it to look around. An IV is being pumped into your arm and in the corner....Sam is sleeping.
The door opens and your eyesight blurs.
"(y/n)!" you hear Dean. He rushes over to your bedside, eyes full of worry and relief. Sam snaps awake, standing from the chair. You swallow, but your throat is really dry.
"Cas," you croak out, but it sounds more like 'ass'. To his credit, Dean doesn't laugh. He reaches for a cup of water and brings it to your lips. You drink greedily and soon you feel you can speak somewhat properly. "Cas?" you try again.
Dean and Sam glance at each other warily. Your heart squeezes painfully and you try to sit up. The pain returns tenfold but you ignore it. Dean tries to push you back down but you swat him away. "Where. Is. He?"
Dean swallows. "He's not so good," Sam speaks up.
"How?" you fight the urge to cry.
"He's in a long surgery."
You gasp, holding back a sob. You rub your hands over your face, angrily pulling out the IV when it gets in the way. "He...he was fine. I thought I was bad. He didn't say anything...." as prideful as you are at containing your emotions, this just appears to be too much. You break down, sobbing. Sam sits down and wraps his arms around you and you bury your head in his shoulder. Dean stands by, feeling terrible.
"I'm sorry, (y/n), we got there as soon as we could," he says painfully.
You want to answer, to tell Dean you know it's not his fault. That Cas hoped they might come and you don't want Dean to place anymore blame on himself. But the tears clog your throat and all you can do is cry.
