You rest your head against your hand, staring dully at the tea as you stir. The sugar is long dissolved, but still you keep stirring.
It isn't like you to be so glum, but lately you've taken up the unhappy practice of thinking about the future. And how you can never have one with the man you love. J'onn J'onzz, a Martian. Doesn't make a great premise for a relationship if he's literally a world away half the time. You remember the last time you saw him, when he said goodbye for the final time, placing a chaste kiss on your forehead while tears rolled down your cheeks. You shake your head, trying to remove the bitter memory from your mind. Instead, you think about happier times, like when he bought you a teddy bear for your birthday one year and how one time, when you felt really sad, he wrapped you in his arms and never let go.
But those days are gone now too.
A knock at the door startles you out of your thoughts. You grab your mug, sipping on your tea as you head to the door. You have no idea who could be calling at this hour. It's nearly 9 pm. You open the door, eyes widening. A gorgeous man is standing on the threshold, holding a bouquet of roses. He seems so familiar....
"May I help you?" you ask uncertainly. An uneasy feeling spreads through your gut.
"(y/n)," he whispers. You drop your mug, gasping.
"J'onn?"
He smiles a little in answer.
"But...How?" He's human looking.
"I can....bend my shape to my will."
You shake your head, backing up. "Why?"
J'onn tentatively steps forward, closing the door behind him. He gently places the roses on your entrance table.
"To show you I'm here. I can be a part of your life and we can be normal."
"But Mars?" you ask, eyes filling with tears.
"There's nothing on Mars for me anymore," J'onn looks at you pleadingly. "Not like here."
"You left," you whisper.
"I know."
You stand there, studying him for a minute. He meets your eyes, searching imploringly. A tear rolls down your cheek and he reaches out to brush it away. You flinch and he draws his hand back uncertainly.
"Change back," you demand.
"What?" he furrows his brow.
"Go back to your Martian form," you explain. J'onn hesitates, but he does as you ask. He's standing before you, just as you remember him. Green skin and all.
"J'onn, we'll never be normal. If we're together, I want you to be as you are." Then you move forward, throwing your arms around him. He wraps you in his embrace, holding you close to his chest.
"Don't leave again," you beg.
"I never will."
