Beautifully and exquisitely done as usual. Love it. Is the girl in the middle wearing a top made from trade cloth? Do NA usually cook their catches? When are things eating raw....as depicted in the buffalo scene in Dances with Wolves?

Thank you! Yup, that's tradecloth! She's Southern Cheyenne, they are close to Bent's Fort and very much into trade cloth. YUP, NA back then usually cooked their catches. Eating things raw is - like in practically all societies - limited to choice specialities (think of oysters, carpaccio, tartar etc). Buffalo liver was often sprinkled with a little bile from the slain animal.
Richard Irving Dodge describes in one of his books (usually riddled with cultural arrogance, racism, mockery and evidently counterfactual truth claims) how, as a junior officer, he once developed a huge crush on a 17 years old chiefs daughter when visiting the Kiowas as an aide to his General. He claims he stopped dreaming of kissing her (or any Indian woman henceforth) when he watched her do the following with a freshly slain buffalo: with her oh so graceful hands she reached deep into the open bowels of the animal, cut out a stretch of gut, put one end of it into her mouth and then "squeezed the whole disgusting mass into her mouth" as if it were a delicious specialty. LOL
I presume she knew what she was doing. Cattle and Buffalos have more than one stomach and process grass very thoroughly. She very lilkely picked a stage in the animal's digestion process where mere prairie grass had been turned into what might have been a tasty salad. We will never know for sure as the Colonel-to-be never inquired any further .

LOL! Richard would have had to change his eating etiquette a bit if he took her out to dinner. Ordering a salad takes on a whole new meaning !

Absolutely stunning work! I love how you displayed the detail in this piece, not just on the ladies and their activities, but also in the fore- and background pieces. Beautifully done, thank you so much for sharing it.
And happy Easter to you!

A wonderful image, Lookoo. I'm sure some of our holidays would definitely get lost in translation. LOL.

Thanks! Or maybe we're just projecting things. If your religion doesn't entail believing that a crucified carpenter saved you from the wrath of the creator, you might do these things for other reasons.

Not projecting, necessarily. Mine does, but that wasn't what I meant. I meant trying to explain something like the concept of Easter, or even Christmas to a Native American, like the Cheyenne, or the Sioux. I remember a tv movie that I watched a long time ago. I don't remember a lot of what it was about, but what I think I do remember is that it was a Christmas movie but with Native American characters, actors, places, etc. An interesting movie, that's for sure.
