"Masking fluid is a liquid that you can cover up spots of your painting with that you don't want to be affected by color. You paint it on with a brush (use an old one, because masking fluid destroys the bristles), then it dries to a thin rubber coat. You can now paint over it, without the watercolor affecting the paper underneath the masking fluid. To get it off again, carefully rub it off with a pen-eraser or your fingertip. If you put masking fluid over a spot that is already colored it depends on the colors and the paper you use whether or not it will damage the color or paper."

Ughh loverly, just loverly
I wish I had discovered that there was such a thing as masking fluid before I started using watercolors
On the off chance that there's no masking fluid to be found around, is there any other alternative..?

Not one that works as good, as far as I know... But it's not that hard to get your hands on masking fluid. I bought mine on Amazon.

I have a question, how do you actually "un-mask fluid?
just wipe it off? wiping off on watercolor is kinda bad.
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
Loonaki In reply to WHITEBEASTX [2012-03-02 18:01:20 +0000 UTC]
Since it's a thin rubber coat as soon as it's dried, you can carefully rub it off with a clean eraser (light pressure). Of course the watercolor has to be dry at that point too. Usually it doesn't damage the paper or colors. But that depends on many things (paper, colors, your experience).

Do you stretch your paper to avoid buckling, or is the 200g paper heavy enough to not buckle on its own?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Loonaki In reply to milleniumocarina [2012-03-02 18:04:12 +0000 UTC]
it does buckle in the process (A LOT), since 200g is pretty thin for watercolor paper. But if I let it dry while still taped to my table and use a blow dryer to fasten the process, it usually flattens out (not completely, but enough for me).

This makes me want to do some watercolor painting! Except, masking kind of confuses me :/ even in digital painting it confuses me. I don't understand what part you masked...the hair, or the skin?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Loonaki In reply to Energyzed [2012-03-02 18:06:22 +0000 UTC]
In the example with the purple hair lady I masked everything around the hair, and the skin. Then painted the hair. Then unmasked the skin and painted the skin. :3
