this was definitely helpful *yeah that sounds really cliched, but few people ever explained the differences between the different types of watercolors and that confused me...*

What are some of the differences between the baked and liquid? I own a lot of tubed watercolors and can work with them pretty well, but I want to purchase some different kinds and try them out as well. So what are some benefits from liquid and baked?

Loonaki In reply to soullesslupe [2012-03-18 12:55:23 +0000 UTC]
Mhh, I find liquid to be useful for most effects and bright colors. Also working with them is fast and so is mixing them. Baked watercolors (at least the ones I own) are not as bright on paper and look more natural. But since you have to mix them with water to make them liquid you also have to keep an eye on the opacity (so it's not too thick or too thin), it's a slower working process. But I also found that you can mix a certain color much more accurately with the baked ones. So in conclusion: liquid -> fast, bright colors, good for effects. baked -> colors look more natural, slow, mixing is more accurate.
Sorry for my late reply.

This is really helpful, thanks! Really inspired me to experiment more with watercolours And I believe the tape you're using is simply called masking tape in English, though you've probably been told that already.

have you ever try poster colors???
I do my arts on poster colors...
but seems like the "salty" effect is not work on poster color...
is it works on all kinds of water colors or on ecolines only???
I love your tips.. thanks for sharing dear

I haven't worked with poster colors.
The salt effect usually works with every kind of watercolor.

do you mind take a walk on my [link]
and see my arts...
actually at the moment... I am learning of your methods..
but as I said... SALT is not suits with poster colors...
but BLOWING is works out...
and WET ON WET also not works... actully works for not wide spreading...
but WET ON DRY is very good ... I can make color gradation easily
if you have another tips and trick... please share with me...

Paragraph from my FAQ ([link] ) about masking fluid:
"Masking fluid is a liquid that you can cover up spots of your painting with that you don't want to be affected by color. You paint it on with a brush (use an old one, because masking fluid destroys the bristles), then it dries to a thin rubber coat. You can now paint over it, without the watercolor affecting the paper underneath the masking fluid. To get it off again, carefully rub it off with a pen-eraser or your fingertip. If you put masking fluid over a spot that is already colored it depends on the colors and the paper you use whether or not it will damage the color or paper.
The masking fluid I use is from Schmincke."
You can buy masking fluid on Amazon. :]

Thank you for the fast reply! I wasn't really expecting one. ^-^
I'll see what I can get then... It sounds quite useful... The only watercolors I've ever used are the basic twelve pack kind that you have to buy for school, the ones that come in the little tablets... But I want to learn how to do this. It's beautiful~!
