I've felt like this a bit lately….Based on a magazine illustration I did recently… changed it a bit and then painted in a bunch of stuff from my desk. Ignore the wildy inaccurate perspective work… it looked quirky and charming in my original sketch but now its starting to bother me...
Things to know.
• this is about the 7th or 8th time I've painted the plastic skull on my desk… and yes, I have a plastic skull on my desk.
• no, that isn't really me…. I have a goatee and don't dribble as much when I drink.
• painting multiple drinking cans is less fun than you might think.
• dinosaurs on the other hand are awesome!

very cool, and I feel for you. I once was boss over a multimillion dollar catalog...sounds like fun? deadlines, deadlines, deadlines and MY God, the paperwork. I enjoyed it while I worked there, (mostly dealing with printers and schedules and stuff) but am also glad to be out of it.

Thanks! Yeah, deadlines are a mixed blessing... it means we get stuff done, but sometimes they can be a real killer. Glad you enjoyed that work while you were there, but it doesn't sound like something that would be sustainable over a long period of time!!

Do you use reference for most of your drawings? For things like a pose and anatomy?

I usually start with unreferenced concept sketches and, depending on the level of detail, source information I may need to get things right. The skull and dinosaur, in this case, were on my actual desk and I painted directly from the objects.
It really depends on the subject matter (some things I have drawn so many times I know them well), how realistic or cartoony I wish something to be etc
