Description Steps on how I painted the hand in this pic [link] , sketched on paper, painted in photoshop.
I did tighter pencils for the face, but the pencils for the hand was rather loose as I was rushing to get this done in time and I'm working on being more confident with my painting.

โ€ข I start by just blocking in my colours with a standard hard edge brush in photoshop. On a hand like this you get more pinks and reds on the ends of the fingers and more yellowy on the fleshier bits between each joint.

โ€ข I start painting up each finger, using the standard soft brush at a lowish opacity to build up smooth tones and the hard edge brush for sharp contrast bits and lines. Skin tones will pick up colouring from the environment - I've added hints of the shirt grey on the side of the thumb/palm and picked up some darker tones where the iphone touches the finger/thumb.

Woah, incredible! I never thought this was painted - a photo manipulation maybe... But seeing how you built it up, step by step, is just... yeah, it's "woah"! o_o Until now I didn't know creating an image of something that looks sooo real - like this hand - was even possible. Awesome.

ok now I guess you're tired of those questions as a master of art - this is amazing, but I dare to ask:

in panel one the finger tones are transparent, in the second one they aren't - how do you do that? do you paint over it again with no transparancy of the brush or is the transparency on the layer or does it just look like it's transparent or ... just, how do you manage this? ^^

I always get in trouble there, try to fill all the room with one nontransparent colour and then overdraw it, but then I don't see the lines underneath...

thanks for sharing!

Thanks ma'am.
I use a plain brush set at around 20% apacity and build up the colour until its solid.

Thanks for sharing! Really impressive, I was thinking on your latest piece you just used a photo for her hand but I can see u don't need to.

Hands are complex and I used to find them fairly difficult, but I have put a lot of effort and practice into improving in this area and hopefully the results are paying off!

The luminosity and texture of the skin is incredible - when I saw the detail shot, I was so shocked that the brushstrokes weren't super-blended away!
Thanks for the step-by-step

Cheers ma'am! I try not to totally lose my brush work in the finished work - I have a friend who is always telling me to not to over work my paintings - but you cant really see much of it unless I post closeups of my paintings!

Conouito [2010-03-18 15:10:05 +0000 UTC]

Ohmygod, I want to be as skilled as you! Im gonna go sketch hands now! But I must ask you, do you use reference photos?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Loopydave In reply to Conouito [2010-03-27 13:06:23 +0000 UTC]

I like to use reference shots for hands a lot of the time - get all the details right, but I also look at my own hands while I paint, and the more you observe and practice painting them, the more the reference you use becomes a guideline or help. Cheers!

Good to hear, I'd be so envious if you were born as a talented hand-artist or something XD I also look at my own hand, it's a lot easier than finding a photo of that pose you want to draw ^^

the color blotches on the left, is that like a digital pallet?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Loopydave In reply to Pan-Pan-Man [2009-12-12 00:47:53 +0000 UTC]

Yup. In photoshop I often create a separate layer as a digital pallet with some of the essential colours - midtones, shadows etc.

Great lesson!

For me, master the color choices is the hardest thing. As a manga-influenced artist, I'm quite good with shades and blacks, but colors...

Well, it's a long way to the top!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Loopydave In reply to mauriliodna [2009-11-24 00:08:54 +0000 UTC]

I've had to work at the colour stuff myself - mostly for the sake of expediency, largely restricted my earlier works to black and white or tones. Colour is like most things - the more you do it, the more comfortable you feel doing it!
