Description
Steps on how I painted the hand in this pic [link] , sketched on paper, painted in photoshop.I did tighter pencils for the face, but the pencils for the hand was rather loose as I was rushing to get this done in time and I'm working on being more confident with my painting.
β’ I start by just blocking in my colours with a standard hard edge brush in photoshop. On a hand like this you get more pinks and reds on the ends of the fingers and more yellowy on the fleshier bits between each joint.
β’ I start painting up each finger, using the standard soft brush at a lowish opacity to build up smooth tones and the hard edge brush for sharp contrast bits and lines. Skin tones will pick up colouring from the environment - I've added hints of the shirt grey on the side of the thumb/palm and picked up some darker tones where the iphone touches the finger/thumb.

Now that I look back at it it looks pretty funny indeed weird contamination, but yeah that's what you get when English is not your primary language I guess.
Pudding.

How do you go about choosing skin colors? I always have a problem with that! The colors used for mixing I mean... is there a "method"?
Would love to hear from you soon thanks!
Your work is amazing BTW

everyone has a billion questions for the loopydave right? RIGHT! one more im looking at the closeup of the fingers and see that you are blocking basic color and then the colored fingers appear almost finished. take the open palm with the shadows blocked in then in the last shots its smoothed and opaque... my question is do you blur any sections as you go ? or is this build up just value and paint

Loopydave In reply to darquem [2011-04-18 02:21:13 +0000 UTC]
I build up the values with a soft brush set at a low opacity by selecting the adjacent colours and 'blend' them that way.
