Not sure how sanitary it would be if they all had mice with them though.
Cheers good sir!

Hey Dave, do you use reference photos for your illustrations? Do you use random google images or do you setup models for the shots?
Amazing stuff dude. Love the color.

Thanks man!
It really depends on the picture etc. I always start with non referenced idea sketches, where I nut out my concept. When I'm working more realistically I'll source details I need through reference books, objects I have (I have a mannequin in my studio and a wardrobe full of costumes and wonderful props I have collected over the years), or where I possibly can, use a friend for reference - often all of the above in a single painting.
This particular piece the witch is kind of based on my best friend, the table is rather like the one in my dining room and I had that skull (plastic, not real) sitting on my desk as I painted - its still there right now (yorrick says 'hi').

I have a mental block about using too much reference material but hell there's no way I can come up with good looking fabric like this without seeing it.
Thanks for sharing secrets dude. Always looking forward to your work!

I'd like to wake up to that! I'm referring to the magic coffee, btw. What did you think I was referring to?
Amazing work, as always.
Have you heard from Claire at ImagineFX? I want my 5%.

I'm having doubts about that magazine lately. Good issues have become hit and miss.
If you ever do a tutorial, even for shits and giggles, give me a shout. I'm still working on my digital painting skills so that my peices don't look like Van Gogh's.
Are you familiar with Papa Ninja's work?

I've been a BIG fan of PapaNinja's work, ever since I ran into it a year or so ago. Man has more talent than is legal and is a hell of nice guy, so I suppose I can forgive him for being french (just kidding Serge!)
Easily one of favourite artists going around dA - and yes I have the ImagineFX issues with his art, as well as one of his posters on my wall.
Have to admit though, I haven't really read many articles (aside from the one on Serge) in them lately - but thats mostly coz I've just been so busy!

Unfortunately, you're not missing that much. There's been a couple issues in the past several months that are chalk full of goodness. However, a number of them have left me scratching my head wondering if it's worth keeping the subscription. The mag isn't cheap!
Can you kindly share the sketch of the witch that started this amazing piece?

Its not so much as being born with talent, but spending week in, week out for many many years just practicing. Still got heaps to learn, but the journey is fun!

Welll I decided to start learning about illustration harder... letΒ΄s see whatΒ΄s happen!
What tools do you use?

Loopydave In reply to dvcomk [2010-10-29 15:23:24 +0000 UTC]
I sketch my drawings up on paper, scan them in and them paint them in photoshop. Before that I used to paint with watercolours, sometimes oils, airbrush, as well as colouring with markers and pencils. My favourite thing today is still sketching with paper and pencil though!
Cheers man!

Its the best kind of silk. That whole story about the Emperors new clothes taught us that imaginary silks lead to a whole lot embarrassment and snickering.
Cheers ma'am.
