Description
Sneak preview of some art I did for SQP art books "NightSong" almost a year ago - book is finally out - so here's a cropped in shot of my contribution to the book.Pencil sketch and then painted in photoshop. Took about a week for the whole thing (not just this bit).
Clicking on it makes it bigger.

i'm quite astonished by the execution and rendering of the figure, no 3d was used in the process?Β

Nope... I did have a friend pose for some reference shots which I used quite extensively for this painting though and the full painting was about 80 hours work. Oh, I did use a 3d grid to map out the perspective on the stone work after getting annoyed drawing all those perspective lines, but thats as far as it went .
Cheers!

She made it herself.... took some sewing lessons at night school after one too many stitching problems. Undead minions can be great for keeping out the peasants, cleaning the stairwells and changing the candle sticks, but they make very poor seamstresses.
Cheers mate!

Coz I use a mouse, there is no 'pressure sensitive' stuff going on and it helps keep your paint nice and even as you build up. Try turning the pressure sensitive bit off on your tablet.
Cheers man!

Is that true, you are working with a mouse?

Yup - kind of like painting fine lines with a brush made like a potato - but after years of working this way, its seems to work for me.

Sweeettttt. I just heard a rumor that you don't use a tablet to produce such awesome work. Could this be true?

Yup. Paint with a mouse. Tried a tablet/pen many, many years ago, but back then there was a bit of a lag between movement and action on the screen and it was soooo annoying, I went back to the mouse and after using it for so long, it kinda works for me. Bought myself a Cintiq recently, tried it a couple of times and then last time it just stopped working. Havent been bothered to try and fix it yet. Just picked up an old tablet to try out, but I'm pretty fast and accurate with the mouse these days, so I'll see how it goes.

This particular illustration was a commercial job for a book cover and took me a couple of weeks to paint. Cant say I have much real spare time to play around with things at the moment, but fire away, I'm always happy to hear peoples ideas!!
